A Google Business Profile is a free listing that an eligible business can manage to shape how it appears in Google Search and Maps. It can help customers find practical details such as hours, contact information, location or service area, photos, and reviews. To qualify, a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours.
How a Google Business Profile works
When people search for a business or a type of business nearby, they may see its Business Profile in Google Search or Maps. The profile gives customers information about the business and a way to interact with it. Google describes it as a local storefront for businesses that meet its eligibility rules. Google’s getting-started guide explains the service and its features.
A profile is a way to manage a business’s information and customer-facing content on Google. It is not a paid placement guarantee, nor does it promise a particular ranking or a specific number of new customers.

Owners can add photos and videos after verification, subject to Google’s content rules and review. Google says approved uploads can take 24–48 hours to appear; that is an estimate for display timing, not a guarantee that every upload will be approved or shown as the cover image. Google may choose a different cover photo based on quality or other sources. See Google’s photo and video guidance for its media requirements.
Is a Google Business Profile free?
Yes. Google says eligible businesses can add or claim a profile at no charge. The profile itself is free; optional advertising and third-party management services are separate. Google’s instructions for adding or claiming a profile describe the process.
Which businesses are eligible?
Google’s central requirement is in-person contact with customers during the business’s stated hours. A storefront customers visit can qualify, as can a service-area business that serves customers in person in a local area. An online-only business without in-person customer contact is not eligible. Google also excludes properties for rent or sale. Its Business Profile policy overview covers eligibility and related rules.

Business Profiles are for eligible businesses that interact with customers face-to-face and appear in local Search and Maps results. Brand profiles showcase eligible brands on Search and are not a replacement for a local business listing; a business that meets the requirements for both may have both. Details are in Google’s comparison of Business Profiles and brand profiles.

How to add, claim, and verify a profile
- Look for an existing listing. Search Google for the business name and location so you can claim an existing unverified profile rather than create a duplicate.
- Add or claim the profile. Follow Google’s prompts to enter accurate business details. Adding or claiming an eligible profile is free.
- Complete the verification option Google offers. The method depends on what Google presents for that business. Verification is required to manage the profile.
- Request ownership if it is already verified by someone else. An authorized business representative can request access or ownership through Google’s process.
Google’s verification guide explains verification’s role, while its add-or-claim instructions cover claiming and ownership requests.

After verification, owners can manage details through Google Search or Maps; available controls can vary by device or platform. Google may also draw on sources beyond the owner, including user contributions and licensed content, and it can update profile information. Check the listing periodically and correct inaccuracies. Google explains editing in its editing guide and describes its information sources in its page about updates and its explanation of how it sources and uses profile information.

Profile content must accurately represent the business and comply with Google’s rules. Review Google’s Business Profile policies and guidelines when creating or updating content.
