A generative art NFT is a blockchain token associated with artwork made through an artist-designed system, such as rules or computer code. The token identifies the asset; it does not necessarily contain the image, the code that created it, or the rights to reproduce it.
What “generative art” means
Generative art is made in part or entirely through a system—often computer code—that helps produce the artwork. The system may follow rules chosen by the artist and may use randomness or chance, but chance is not required. The Victoria and Albert Museum describes generative art as pieces that use a set of rules to make an artwork; the Museum of Modern Art defines it as art created through an autonomous system or computer code, often relying on randomness or chance.
Generative art is one kind of computer art, not a synonym for all digital art. A digital illustration made directly by an artist, for example, is not necessarily generative.

An NFT is a distinct token recorded and managed by a blockchain’s smart contract. On Ethereum, the contract address together with the token ID identifies a particular ERC-721 token. Ownership of that token can be publicly verified on the blockchain, but the token and the artwork it is associated with are separate things.
#1 Best Overall
A project can use a token ID as an input to a system that generates a particular image. In other projects, the artwork may already exist and the token may simply identify or point to it. There is no single required order in which generative art must be created and minted.
Where the code, image, and metadata are stored
“Generative art NFT” describes the relationship between a generative artwork and an NFT; it does not promise that every component is stored on the blockchain. The code or algorithm, the rendered image or other media, the metadata describing or locating that content, and the token itself may be stored in different places.

- Token: The blockchain records the token and its identifier.
- Algorithm or code: It may be stored on-chain or elsewhere, depending on the project.
- Artwork media: The resulting image or other media may be written to the blockchain or served from external storage.
- Metadata: Descriptive information and links to content may also be stored on-chain or externally.
MoMA uses “on-chain art” for NFTs whose smart contract and artwork media are written into the blockchain. That is a narrower description of storage, not another name for all generative art NFTs. OpenSea distinguishes fully on-chain arrangements from projects where, for example, metadata or an algorithm is on-chain while media is external.
How implementations can differ
Projects illustrate why the label alone does not establish where everything lives. OpenSea identifies Art Blocks as an example in which the algorithm is on-chain while media may be served externally. Musée d’Orsay describes Agoria’s works as existing on Tezos and created with fx(hash) and Feral File. These are examples of particular arrangements, not a universal technical model.

To understand a specific work, check its documentation for the token’s network and identifier, where the generation code runs or is stored, where the media is hosted, and how its metadata points to the content. A token’s existence on a blockchain does not, by itself, prove that the image or algorithm is on-chain.

Owning the token establishes control of that blockchain token; it does not automatically establish copyright or a complete license to reproduce the associated artwork. The rights attached to a particular work depend on its applicable terms. Check the project’s own license or sale terms rather than inferring reproduction rights from token ownership.
