When you stream, GB describes how much data you use; Mbps describes how quickly data can travel. How many GB streaming uses depends on the service and its quality or data settings.
What does GB mean?
GB stands for gigabyte, a decimal unit of data size. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines 1 GB as 109 bytes, or 1,000,000,000 bytes. A GB measures data quantity, not internet speed.
GB and GiB are different units
A gibibyte, abbreviated GiB, is a binary unit equal to 230 bytes, or 1,073,741,824 bytes. NIST lists GB and GiB separately; the similar names do not make them interchangeable. A device or service may display one or the other, so check the unit when comparing storage or data figures. See the NIST GiB glossary entry.
GB is not Gb
Capitalization matters: GB means gigabyte, while Gb means gigabit. They represent different quantities. Internet plans and video-streaming speed recommendations commonly use Mbps—megabits per second—whereas data consumption is commonly reported in GB or GB per hour.

How much data does streaming use?
There is no single GB-per-hour figure that applies to every streaming service or video. Netflix’s Help Center publishes the following per-device estimates for Netflix settings; they are service-specific estimates, not a universal streaming rate.

These figures come from Netflix’s data-use guidance. They are estimates for Netflix, not averages across platforms, and actual use can vary. Do not assume that another service, a different device, or a different setting will use the same amount.

Netflix mobile settings
Netflix also describes mobile settings in approximate hours per GB: Automatic is about 4 hours per GB, Save Data about 6 hours per GB, and Maximum Data can use 1 GB per 20 minutes or more, depending on the device and network speed. Netflix cautions that Maximum Data is intended for unlimited data plans. These are Netflix’s own approximate figures, not general rates for mobile streaming.
GB per hour and Mbps answer different questions
GB per hour estimates the amount of data consumed over time. Mbps describes a data-transfer rate: how quickly data can travel across a connection. A faster rate does not itself state a monthly allowance or how many gigabytes a particular video will use.

For context, Netflix recommends stable internet speeds of at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p, and 15 Mbps for 4K. Those are Netflix’s recommendations for video quality, not data-use estimates or guarantees that every household will get that quality. They should not be substituted for the GB-per-hour figures.
Estimate data use or viewing time
For a rough estimate, use the streaming service’s own GB-per-hour figure for the setting you expect to use. Multiply that rate by viewing hours to estimate consumption, or divide a data allowance by the hourly rate to estimate viewing time.

- Find the provider’s rate. Choose the estimate for the service and setting in question, such as Netflix High HD at up to 3 GB per hour.
- Estimate data for a session. Multiply the hourly rate by hours watched. At Netflix’s stated High HD estimate, one hour works out to up to about 3 GB.
- Estimate hours from an allowance. Divide the allowance by the hourly rate. For example, an allowance of 30 GB divided by 3 GB per hour gives about 10 hours at that stated rate.
- Treat the result as approximate. The calculation applies the provider’s estimate; it is not a promise of exact usage or a guarantee of how long an allowance will last.
Netflix says restricting data use can affect video quality, and its explanation of how Netflix streams videos notes that congestion along a connection can affect quality or cause playback problems. Home connection strength and simultaneous network use also affect the viewing experience. The cited guidance does not quantify how much each factor changes data volume.

Netflix’s data-use help page explains how to change its data settings. Choose a lower-use setting if conserving data matters more than maximum picture quality; a restriction may reduce video quality. The available controls and their effect depend on the service and device, so consult the provider’s current instructions rather than assuming one setting applies to every app.

Why an older Netflix figure may not match current guidance
Netflix’s May 5, 2016 announcement said its then-default cellular setting would allow about three hours of TV shows and movies per gigabyte, at approximately 600 kilobits per second. That is historical context, not a statement of Netflix’s current default. The announcement is available at Netflix’s 2016 cellular data-controls post.
