A French manicure is a nail design with a sheer pink, nude or clear base and a contrasting tip, traditionally white. The familiar look has expanded to include colored, blended, reverse and decorative versions. Its modern form is commonly credited to Jeff Pink and his work with Hollywood productions in the 1970s, although the exact origin is debated.
What defines a French manicure?
The defining feature is the contrast between the nail bed and its tip: a translucent or nude base keeps the nail looking natural, while a visible accent follows or reinterprets the free edge. In the classic version, that accent is white. The design can be adapted to different colors, nail lengths and placements.

Why is it called a French manicure?
The name is tied to Paris runway exposure in ORLY’s account, not proof that the style originated in France. ORLY says Jeff Pink began developing a versatile look for Hollywood actresses in 1976, so their nails would work across wardrobe changes. After the look appeared on Paris runways in 1978, Pink settled on the name “French Manicure” (ORLY’s company history).

ORLY’s later account cautions that the precise origin is debated, while crediting Pink with popularizing the modern version in the 1970s (The Enduring Elegance of the French Manicure). In September 2026, the company described the style as created in 1976 for Hollywood productions and said its Original French Manicure Kit was under curatorial review by the Smithsonian National Museum of American History (ORLY’s September 9, 2026 press release). That is a corporate account of the history, not independent confirmation that no earlier versions existed.
What are the main types of French manicure?

How to do a French manicure at home
For a classic look, use a sheer pink or nude base, white tip polish and a precision brush. A kit can bundle the products; otherwise, choose them separately. ORLY’s catalog lists several white tip shades and a brush designed for controlled application, and the company identifies an Original French Manicure Kit in its 2026 announcement.
- Choose the base and tip. Select a sheer pink, nude or clear base and a contrasting tip polish. For a traditional French manicure, choose white.
- Apply the base. Follow the polish or kit directions and allow the base to dry before painting the tip.
- Paint the tip. Use a precision brush to create the contrast along the free edge. Keep the tip proportionate to the nail, especially on short nails.
- Let the design dry. Follow the product directions before handling the nails or applying any additional coat included in your chosen system.
