A forward deployed engineer (FDE) works closely with a customer to understand an operational problem, build or integrate software around it, and deliver a solution in the customer’s environment. The role is a distinct, customer-embedded form of engineering—not evidence that traditional software engineering is dying. Employers use the title differently, so the key question is what the engineer actually owns and ships.
What does a Forward Deployed Engineer do?
An FDE starts with a customer’s workflow or operational problem, works out what the customer’s data and systems can support, then builds, integrates, and deploys software to address it. The work can continue after launch as the engineer gathers feedback and improves the solution. A deployment-focused description of the pattern similarly emphasizes choosing a valuable workflow, understanding data and operational constraints, and moving integrations from prototype into production (TechRadar Pro).
Palantir calls the role Forward Deployed Software Engineer (FDSE). Its London listing describes small-team project ownership from the first customer conversation through shipping, including architecture and design decisions, large-scale data work, custom applications, LLM workflows, production solutions for a particular customer, and relationships with stakeholders from users to executives (Palantir’s London listing). A New Grad Commercial listing describes comparable work and says graduates can take on meaningful ownership from day one (Palantir’s New Grad Commercial listing).
How is an FDE different from a product engineer, consultant, or sales engineer?
The title alone does not settle the distinction. Compare the role along three practical dimensions: who owns production code, whether the work is customer-specific or shared across customers, and how much customer discovery and deployment contact the job involves.

This is a useful way to reason about the jobs, not a universal taxonomy. A role guide characterizes the FDE distinction as enabling many capabilities for one customer, compared with a product engineer building a capability for many customers (The Forward Deployed). In practice, responsibilities can overlap. Ask who owns the shipped code and its production follow-up rather than relying on the title.
What skills and working conditions should you expect?
Technical range
Customer problems can require an engineer to move between data integration, application development, architecture, and deployment. Palantir’s London listing asks for proficiency in one or more programming languages and experience with secure application development, including access control and privacy considerations (Palantir’s London listing). Those are requirements in that posting, not a universal checklist for FDE jobs.

Problem-solving and communication
Because the work begins with a customer’s situation rather than a fully specified feature, the engineer may need to break down an ambiguous problem, communicate with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders, and iterate pragmatically. A career guide also highlights LLM literacy for AI-focused roles (FDE Jobs’ 2026 guide). Treat these as preparation themes; employers and teams set their own requirements.
Travel and context switching
One Palantir London listing says travel may be 25–50%, depending on team and location (Palantir’s London listing). That range is specific to that posting and should not be applied to FDE roles generally. Customer-facing work can also bring changing priorities, customer-driven schedules, and time spent integrating with an existing platform instead of building a shared system from scratch (FDE Jobs’ 2026 guide). Check the travel expectations and day-to-day balance with the employer and team.

Who is likely to enjoy the FDE role?
The role may suit engineers who enjoy close customer feedback, practical problem-solving, and taking responsibility for an outcome from discovery through delivery. It may be a less natural fit if you prefer deep focus on a shared product roadmap, minimal customer contact, or a predictable work schedule. The balance depends on the employer, account, and team; investigate the actual work rather than assuming every FDE position has the same shape.

There is no authoritative, representative labor-market statistic established here for FDE pay or job growth. FDE Jobs’ July 5, 2026 guide estimates a U.S. median base salary of about $173,000 and claims postings grew by more than 800% year over year (FDE Jobs’ 2026 guide). The guide does not provide enough methodological detail to treat either figure as independently verified or representative, so they should not be used as a reliable benchmark for the broader market.

How should you evaluate an FDE job opening?
- Look for concrete delivery work. Does the description say the engineer builds, integrates, deploys, or maintains software in production?
- Clarify ownership after launch. Ask who handles production issues, iteration, and ongoing customer needs after the first deployment.
- Understand the customer-contact balance. Ask how discovery, stakeholder meetings, on-site work, and travel fit into a typical role. Any stated percentage should be read as specific to that employer and team.
- Find out what is reusable. Ask whether the main output is tailored to one customer, contributes to a shared product, or includes both kinds of work.
- Check the technical and security expectations. Confirm the languages, systems, deployment responsibilities, and privacy or access-control requirements for the specific position.
Palantir describes its own work as difficult, high-stakes, and owned end-to-end, from the first customer conversation to shipping a product that changes how the customer operates (Palantir job listing). That is an employer’s description of its role, not a guarantee about every job carrying the FDE title.
