A dynamic image is an image whose source, size, crop, format, or pixels are chosen or created while a page runs. The term covers two different techniques: a browser selecting the most suitable prepared image for a device or layout, and code generating or changing image pixels at runtime. Use srcset and sizes for resolution variants, <picture> for crop or format choices, and Canvas when you need to draw or edit pixels.
What “dynamic image” means
“Dynamic image” does not name one HTML element or one image format. It describes an image that is not simply a single fixed file used identically in every situation. The page or browser makes a choice at runtime, or code creates the displayed pixels.
In web development, the phrase most often refers to one of two related approaches:
- Dynamic delivery: you prepare multiple image files, and the browser chooses which URL to download based on the available candidates and the image’s display context. HTML’s
srcset,sizes, and<picture>support this. - Dynamic generation or manipulation: JavaScript or another runtime process draws, composites, scales, crops, annotates, or otherwise creates image pixels. In a browser, the Canvas API is a native way to do this.
These methods solve different problems. If you have the same photograph in several resolutions, let the browser select a suitable file. If the mobile layout needs a different crop, provide an art-directed source. If an image must be assembled from live data or edited by a user, use a drawing or image-generation process such as Canvas.

How a browser chooses a responsive image
For an <img> with width-descriptor candidates in srcset, the browser uses the sizes media-condition list to estimate the rendered image slot, then selects a candidate with a suitable intrinsic width. It also considers factors such as pixel density, zoom, orientation, and network conditions. The page supplies candidates and sizing guidance; the browser makes the final selection.
With <picture>, the browser evaluates nested <source> elements, including their media, type, and srcset values. If none is usable, it falls back to the nested <img>. That fallback is the semantic image element, so it should have meaningful alternative text and a usable source.
Use srcset and sizes when only resolution changes
Use this pattern when each candidate shows the same composition and you want the browser to choose an appropriate resolution:

>The w descriptors identify each file’s intrinsic width in pixels. The sizes value describes the expected rendered slot at the listed media conditions; it does not resize the file or force a particular candidate. Make those values reflect the actual layout. If a page displays the image at half the viewport width but sizes says it occupies 800 CSS pixels, the browser may choose a larger candidate than needed.

This can reduce layout shift. Keep them consistent with the image’s intended aspect ratio.
Use <picture> for a different crop or format
Resolution switching alone cannot make a wide photograph into a portrait composition. Use <picture> when the content or format should change under a condition:

</picture>The first source supplies a narrow-screen crop; the next offers an AVIF alternative where supported; the nested <img> remains the fallback. Order sources according to the conditions you intend to test, and retain a meaningful alt on the <img>. <picture> is also useful when offering alternative formats or when a different crop better suits a narrow layout.
Use density descriptors for pixel-density alternatives
srcset can describe candidates with pixel-density descriptors such as 1x and 2x, rather than intrinsic-width descriptors such as 480w and 800w. The descriptors tell the browser what each candidate represents. When using width descriptors, pair them with sizes so the browser can estimate the slot. Choose the descriptor style that matches how you are supplying the alternatives; do not mix them in one srcset.
How to generate or edit pixels with Canvas
Canvas is appropriate when code needs to combine or modify image content, rather than merely choose among existing files. Common uses include runtime compositing, drawing chart backdrops, game sprites, and user-edited imagery. The basic sequence is to get a canvas context, load an image, draw it, and then export or use the resulting canvas.

</script>drawImage() draws the loaded image into the canvas; the destination width and height in this example scale it to the canvas dimensions. You can draw additional elements or composite multiple sources before exporting. A data URL is one possible export result, but it is not the only way to use a canvas result.
Canvas and cross-origin images
A canvas can become tainted when it includes an image from another origin that has not granted the necessary access through CORS. Once tainted, pixel reads or exports such as toDataURL() are blocked. If the source is cross-origin, the image server must grant permission with CORS; code on your page alone cannot grant it. Confirm that the server sends the required permission before building a workflow that reads or exports those pixels.
Which approach should you use?

Responsive delivery can save bandwidth by avoiding an unnecessarily large download, and an art-directed crop can make better use of a narrow layout. Those are qualitative benefits, not a guaranteed percentage improvement: the result depends on the candidates, layout, and browser choice. Prepared files remain ordinary URLs that can be delivered and cached like other image resources. Canvas adds a different constraint: exporting or reading pixels from a cross-origin source depends on its CORS permission.

Why a responsive image may load the wrong size
- The
sizesvalue does not match the layout. Compare each media condition and stated slot width with the CSS layout at that viewport. Correct the slot description rather than assuming the browser will infer it from your stylesheet. - The candidate widths do not fit the intended slots. Check that each
wdescriptor matches the corresponding file’s actual intrinsic width and that the set includes useful candidates for the rendered sizes. - You expected an art-directed crop from
srcset. Resolution candidates do not by themselves express a different composition. Put the alternate crop in a suitable<picture>source with its intended media condition. - A
<picture>source is not being selected. Check itsmediacondition,type, andsrcset, then verify that the fallback<img>is usable. The browser falls back when no source is usable. - The image appears to cause layout movement. Supply the image’s correct
widthandheightso its aspect-ratio space can be reserved before loading. - Canvas export fails for a remote image. Check whether that image’s server grants CORS permission. A tainted canvas blocks pixel reads and export.
A browser can consider zoom, orientation, density, and network conditions when choosing a candidate. Therefore, one observed choice is not necessarily the choice every user or device will receive. Diagnose the markup and its intended slot first, then test the relevant layout conditions.
Capture a rendered dynamic page as an image
Sometimes the task is not to create a responsive image for a website, but to save a screenshot of a page after it has rendered. These are separate workflows: responsive image markup controls what an ordinary visitor’s browser loads, while a screenshot captures a rendered page. For a browser-based workflow, open the target page at the viewport you need and capture it after its content is ready; select the image or page region and output format according to your use case.
