A driver monitoring system (DMS) estimates a driver’s state or engagement and may warn the driver—or contribute to a vehicle response—if it detects a condition such as distraction, drowsiness, or disengagement. Some systems observe the driver directly; others infer a possible problem from driving inputs. A DMS supports safer driving but does not replace the driver’s attention or judgment.

What does a driver monitoring system do?

“Driver monitoring system” describes a broad vehicle function, not one standardized device. Euro NCAP uses the related term Driver State Monitoring (DSM) for technology that determines a driver’s state. The sensors, conditions detected, operating limits, and responses differ between vehicles.

A system first estimates a state from available signals. Depending on the vehicle, it may then show a warning, sound an alert, provide a haptic cue, or use the information as part of a safety or driver-handover function. Detection does not necessarily mean that the vehicle will intervene.

How does driver monitoring work?

Direct monitoring of the driver

A direct system uses sensors to observe the driver. In a camera-based implementation, software may assess visible cues such as gaze direction, head posture, or eye closure. This approach can help identify that a driver appears to be looking away or becoming drowsy, but the exact cues and capabilities depend on the system.

Indirect monitoring of driving behavior

An indirect system infers possible distraction or fatigue from vehicle or driver-control signals. These can include steering-wheel movement, lane position, speed, acceleration, or pedal use. Some systems combine direct and indirect signals; it should not be assumed that any particular vehicle uses every signal listed here.

After estimating a state, a vehicle may deliver a visual or audio warning, a haptic cue such as a seat vibration or brake pulse, or another safety response. Transport Canada notes that some systems operate only above a particular speed or while a driver-assistance feature is active. Other possible responses, such as reversible seat-belt pretensioners or hazard lights, are vehicle-specific examples, not standard DMS behavior. Transport Canada’s driver-monitoring guidance advises checking the owner’s manual for the system’s features and limits.

What can a DMS detect?

Capabilities vary. Examples included in Euro NCAP’s 2025 passenger-car assessment protocol span brief or sustained distraction, phone use, impairment or drowsiness, microsleep, sleep, and an unresponsive state. Its separate assisted-driving assessment addresses monitoring in the context of assistance features, including hands-on behavior and transient driver states. These are assessment categories, not a guarantee that every car detects them.

In the driver-control assistance context, UN Regulation No. 171 as published in the EU Official Journal addresses monitoring motoric and visual disengagement, with examples such as whether hands are on steering control, gaze direction, and head posture. The regulation’s scope and local applicability matter; its existence does not establish that every DMS is legally required to recognize every listed state in every market.

What do alerts and interventions mean in practice?

A warning is a prompt for the driver to respond, not proof that the system can safely manage the situation. The Euro NCAP Safe Driving—Driver Engagement Protocol, version 1.1 (October 2025), allocates 25 assessment points to driver monitoring: 15 for transient states and 10 for non-transient states. It describes assessment conditions, including default-on behavior at the start of a journey, continuous state monitoring for scoring eligibility, warnings or interventions, and a learning period. Those rules govern Euro NCAP scoring; they are not a universal specification for vehicles or a statement of law in every jurisdiction.

Euro NCAP’s Assisted Driving Protocol, version 1.1 (October 2025) covers driver monitoring within assessed assisted-driving systems. Assessment protocols help define how certain features are evaluated, but a score or protocol requirement should not be read as a promise about every vehicle’s equipment or behavior.

What are the limits of driver monitoring?

Detection can be affected by real-world conditions. Euro NCAP’s assessment protocol identifies variables such as lighting, eyewear, and occlusion. The European Commission overview of in-vehicle detection and warning devices also notes that there is no single commonly accepted method for detecting driver fatigue. A system’s performance and availability therefore cannot be inferred from the label “driver monitoring” alone.

  • Operating conditions: Some systems work only above a speed threshold or when a particular assistance feature is active.
  • Visibility and fit: Lighting, eyewear, face coverings, or other obstructions may affect a camera-based system.
  • Different thresholds and outputs: Manufacturers determine which states are recognized and what happens after a detection.
  • Vehicle-specific data practices: Collection, storage, and use of camera or other sensor data should be checked in the manufacturer’s documentation; they should not be assumed from the feature name.

Transport Canada puts the safety boundary plainly: a monitoring system does not replace attention and judgment. Its guidance says not to drive when drowsy and to take a break rather than rely on the system as an alarm. Consult the owner’s manual and manufacturer documentation for your vehicle’s detected states, warning behavior, operating limits, privacy details, and any deactivation rules.

How to understand a DMS listing or feature description

When comparing vehicle descriptions, focus on what the particular system actually does rather than the DMS label. Check these details in the manual or manufacturer materials:

  • Whether monitoring is direct, indirect, or a combination.
  • Which states it is designed to detect, such as gaze distraction, drowsiness, phone use, or unresponsiveness.
  • Whether it provides visual, audible, or haptic alerts, and whether it can contribute to a vehicle response.
  • When it operates, including speed thresholds and dependence on an active driver-assistance feature.
  • How it handles sensor data and what conditions can limit operation.
