A distributed operating system coordinates multiple networked computers through an operating-system interface that makes their resources and execution appear to belong to one coherent system. Its central aim is transparency: programs and users should not need to manage every detail of where a resource or computation is located.
What is a distributed operating system?
A distributed operating system manages resources and program execution across multiple computers as an integrated system. A program may run on one computer and access data stored on another through the operating system’s interface, rather than handling every network interaction itself.
The University of Cambridge text describes the defining interface this way: “In a distributed operating system this interface is enhanced so that a program may be run on any computer in the distributed system and access data on any other computer.” Cambridge’s operating-systems text presents this as a contrast with a conventional operating-system interface.
How does it differ from a computer network or distributed application?
A computer network connects machines so they can communicate. A distributed application uses that network to coordinate processes running on separate computers. A distributed operating system goes further at the operating-system level: it extends the interface programs use and takes responsibility for handling distribution of resources or execution.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These categories are useful distinctions, not rigid labels that every real system fits perfectly. The key question is whether distribution is primarily handled by an application and its runtime, or is integrated into the operating-system interface.
What does transparency mean?
Transparency means hiding some details of distribution from users or programs. An extended naming scheme can let a program refer to a resource without encoding which computer holds it. Depending on the design, the system may also hide where a program is executing or where data is placed.

- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Location transparency: A resource can be accessed without the user or program needing to know its physical location.
- Data-access transparency: The interface can make access to data on another computer resemble access to local data.
- Execution transparency: A program can run on a suitable computer in the system without requiring the user to select that machine.
A “single system image” is shorthand for the intended experience: one coherent system presented over a collection of loosely coupled computers. It is an objective, not a guarantee that latency, failures, or administrative complexity disappear. A design may try to mask failures, but transparency alone does not promise that every failure will be hidden.
How are distributed operating systems organized?
One possible design uses small kernels to provide essential communication services, while other operating-system services run across processors as distributed services. Some services may be replicated to improve scalability or availability, but replication by itself does not guarantee fault tolerance; the outcome depends on how failures and data consistency are handled.

Amoeba illustrates a microkernel-and-server approach. A University of Malta case study describes a microkernel with server processes providing other operating-system functionality. The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam project page describes Amoeba as a microkernel-based system intended to turn a collection of workstations or single-board computers into a transparent distributed system: Amoeba project page.
What are examples of distributed operating systems?
Amoeba and Plan 9 appear as teaching and historical examples in course material. Amoeba is also discussed in a university case study and on its project page. These examples help illustrate the concept and its architectural choices; those references do not establish that either system is currently maintained, readily installable, or commonly used in production.

The distinction between distributed operating systems and computer networks has also been treated as a design question in the literature. Tanenbaum and van Renesse’s 1985 survey discusses definitions, design issues, and examples such as the Cambridge Distributed Computing System, Amoeba, V, and Eden: “Distributed operating systems” in ACM Computing Surveys.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the simplest way to remember the definition?
A distributed operating system integrates multiple computers at the operating-system level and aims to present their resources and execution through a coherent interface. Its defining goal is to make distribution less visible—not to make the underlying computers, network delays, or failure risks cease to exist.
