A disk on module (DOM) is a compact flash-storage device that connects directly to a compatible host interface and appears to the computer as disk storage. The term describes a category of devices, not one universal connector: SATA, PATA/IDE, USB, and ZIF models exist, and a module only works when its interface, physical design, and power arrangement match the host.
What a disk on module does
A DOM stores data in flash memory and presents it to the host like a disk. Intel’s Disk on Module Install Guide for the Intel Storage System SSR212MA describes a DOM as flash memory that “emulates an ordinary magnetic hard disk drive.” That describes how the host uses it; it does not mean the module contains a spinning magnetic disk.
Unlike the familiar 2.5-inch SSD form factor, many DOMs are compact modules that plug directly into a connector on a motherboard or embedded system. Their shape and connection depend on the particular product and interface.
DOM interfaces and physical designs
DOM is not synonymous with SATA. Product families include SATA, PATA/IDE, USB, and ZIF models. SATA and PATA/IDE are distinct interfaces, so a module made for one is not a drop-in replacement for the other.

Where DOMs are used
DOMs are used where a compact, directly connected storage device is useful, including server boot or recovery storage, operating-system installation, licensing, embedded systems, industrial computers, and thin clients. These are use cases, not guarantees that any DOM will work in any server or embedded board. Supermicro’s SATA DOM overview lists several of these applications.
How to check compatibility
Before buying or installing a module, verify the exact module and host documentation rather than relying only on a matching connector name.

- Match the interface. Confirm that the host supports SATA, PATA/IDE, USB, or ZIF as appropriate. A SATA port does not support a PATA/IDE DOM.
- Match the connector and geometry. Check pin count, orientation, profile, and physical clearance around the host connector. A connector can fit in name but still be obstructed by nearby components or the case.
- Check power. Confirm how the module receives power and whether the host supports that arrangement. For example, Supermicro says its listed SuperDOM does not require a 5V power cable and is backward compatible with boards that require one; other modules may differ. - Choose capacity for the application. Match usable storage needs to the exact model’s capacity and availability. Supermicro’s page lists 16 GB, 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB SuperDOM options; product listings can change.
- Match endurance and environment to the workload. Check the exact model’s endurance rating against expected write activity, and review its temperature range and other environmental specifications in the current datasheet. The word “industrial” alone does not establish endurance or operating limits.
Endurance and power claims are product-specific
DOMs use NAND flash, which has finite program/erase cycles. A workload with frequent writes can therefore matter to service life; select a model whose endurance rating fits the intended use. Supermicro’s endurance note explains the need to match flash endurance to work patterns. The term DOM alone does not show that a device will outlast a hard drive.
Supermicro states that its SATA DOMs use about 1–2 W compared with 6–7 W for an HDD. This is the manufacturer’s product-page comparison, not an independently verified or universal measurement for all DOMs and hard drives. Likewise, industrial models can have different environmental ratings and features; consult the exact model’s current specifications. ADATA’s industrial catalog illustrates variation across industrial storage products.
