A disappearing message app is a messaging app—or a feature inside one—that automatically removes messages or selected media after a set time or after they are viewed. It limits how long content remains available in a chat; it does not guarantee that nobody can save or share a copy.
How disappearing messages work
With a timer-based feature, messages in a conversation are set to expire after a chosen interval. Some apps also let users set a default timer for new chats. For example, Signal documents timers for individual conversations and default timers for new chats. WhatsApp says a message can disappear when its selected timer ends even if the recipient has not opened WhatsApp during that period.
View-once media works differently: the content is intended to disappear from the chat after the recipient opens it, rather than after a conversation-wide timer. WhatsApp describes this for photos, videos, and voice messages in its view-once help page.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat disappearing messages do not guarantee
They cannot prevent every copy
A recipient can preserve what appears on screen before it disappears, including by photographing the display with another camera. Signal explicitly warns that disappearing messages are not suitable when the recipient is an adversary who may want to keep a record. Automatic deletion is therefore a retention limit, not a way to make viewed content impossible to capture.

They are not the same as end-to-end encryption
Expiration and encryption address different privacy questions. A timer controls how long a message remains available in a chat; end-to-end encryption protects message contents from being read in transit by parties outside the conversation. Signal says its conversations are always end-to-end encrypted, while WhatsApp presents encryption and disappearing messages as separate privacy features. See Signal’s explanation of its privacy protections and WhatsApp’s feature announcement.
Why app and chat mode matter
Do not assume that a feature behaves identically across every app, device, or conversation type. Telegram’s FAQ discusses self-destruct timers in Secret Chats and recommends Secret Chats for people concerned about personal security; that is a specific chat mode, not a claim that every Telegram conversation has the same protections. The FAQ also addresses whether a conversation partner can take a screenshot: Telegram FAQ.
