A digital data service is, in plain language, a service that handles or provides digital information. But the phrase has no single meaning across all contexts: a US broadcast statute uses it for specified services, while a telecom provider has used the capitalized term Digital Data Service (DDS) for a dedicated private-line connection. Check the document and jurisdiction where you found the phrase before treating it as a precise technical or legal category.
What does “digital data service” mean in general?
As a plain-language description, it refers to a service that works with or delivers digital information. That explanation is useful for everyday reading, but it is not a universal formal definition of the combined phrase.
The UK Government’s Government Functional Standard GovS 005: Digital offers helpful building blocks: it defines data as information collected, stored, processed, shared, or used to support decisions, services, and operations. It describes a service as a complete solution that brings together technology and non-technology elements to help users achieve an outcome. The standard summarizes the latter idea as: “A service captures all the things that collectively deliver an outcome for users.” These concepts explain the words, not a context-free definition of “digital data service.”
What does the term mean in US law?
In 47 U.S.C. § 336(h)(7), the phrase has a specific meaning within that subsection. The 2018 edition of Title 47 of the United States Code says “digital data service” includes digitally based interactive broadcast service and wireless Internet access.

This is a statutory category tied to that provision, not a definition to apply automatically to contracts, provider catalogs, or everyday technology discussions. The cited text is from the 2018 edition; anyone relying on it for a current legal matter should check the current codification and the relevant law.
What does DDS mean in a telecom catalog?
In a CenturyLink Wholesale catalog, capitalized Digital Data Service (DDS) names a private-line data transmission offering. The provider catalog describes a dedicated point-to-point or multipoint circuit with synchronous, full-duplex transmission. It lists rates of 2.4, 4.8, 9.6, 19.2, 56.0, and 64.0 Kbps.
Rank #2
That description is from catalog version V6.0; it does not establish that the service is currently available to order. In this setting, DDS is a product label for a circuit service, not a general synonym for internet access or digital services.
Why does the meaning depend on context?
The words can appear in laws, technical documents, or provider product catalogs, each with its own scope. Historical Australian legislation also used the term in multiple provisions, which a 2009 amending act repealed or changed. That history is a reminder that jurisdiction and document date matter when interpreting legal terminology.

When you encounter the phrase, use these checks to narrow down its meaning:
- Find the source: Is it a statute, a technical specification, a contract, or a provider catalog?
- Check jurisdiction and date: Legal definitions may be specific to a country, provision, and version of the law.
- Notice capitalization: “DDS” or capitalized “Digital Data Service” may identify a provider’s named product.
- Read the surrounding text: Look for details about delivery, such as broadcast, wireless access, or a dedicated circuit, and whether the term is being defined locally.
Do not assume the phrase always means an internet subscription, cloud service, analytics tool, or consumer product. Its precise meaning comes from the source using it.
