A decentralized cryptographic-location network uses signed records and observations from participating devices or witnesses to make claims about presence or interaction more auditable. XYO (XY Oracle Network) is a named example: its Bound Witness mechanism records mutual device interactions. These records can strengthen evidence that particular keys signed an event, but signatures alone do not prove that a device was at a specific geographic coordinate.
What the term means
The phrase describes a network design for collecting and checking evidence about where devices or assets interacted. Rather than relying only on one central location authority, it combines cryptographic records with observations from devices or other participants. The aim is to make a presence claim more verifiable—not to make location inherently trustworthy simply by putting it on a blockchain.
XYO’s 2018 white paper presents a Proof-of-Origin-based cryptographic location network as a way to connect blockchain systems with real-world data collection. It is useful for understanding the proposal’s design, but a protocol description is not, by itself, independent evidence of deployment performance. Read the XYO white paper.

How XYO’s Bound Witness works
XYO describes a Bound Witness as a two-way electronic handshake. Devices exchange data and public keys, each signs the event, and each retains a record. XYO says this mutual record supports Proof of Origin and Proof of Location. See XYO’s Bound Witness documentation.

The resulting record is evidence that the parties associated with those keys recorded an interaction. Inferring where that interaction happened requires additional confidence in how proximity was measured, whether the witnesses were independent, and whether the event was fresh and resistant to interference. A valid signature shows that a key signed particular data; it does not independently establish a physical coordinate.
What a location proof must establish
Location assurance depends on the physical measurements and trust model behind a record. A system’s design should address questions such as:

- Evidence source: Is location self-reported, derived from GNSS, inferred from device-to-device interaction, or observed by fixed witnesses?
- Verifier independence: Are there multiple witnesses, and are they controlled independently enough to reduce collusion risk?
- Freshness and replay: Does the system use fresh challenges or other safeguards to prevent an old interaction record from being reused?
- Radio and ranging integrity: Can spoofed signals or malicious ranging make devices appear closer or somewhere they are not?
- Keys and privacy: How are compromised keys handled, and what location detail is revealed, to whom, and whether it is stored on-chain?
- Operational conditions: What calibration, latency, coverage, device cost, precision, and throughput are needed in indoor and outdoor settings?
A 2026 preprint by Tamor Tomson, Eduardo Brito, Amnir Hadachi, and Ulrich Norbisrath describes a separate physical-witnessing prototype: nearby fixed witnesses measure presence, exchange claims over a local mesh, and store proofs in a tamper-evident ledger. Its abstract reports that controlled indoor tests detected simulated replay and malicious-ranging attacks, while identifying calibration, verifier independence, radio integrity, and scaling as continuing requirements. This is a distinct research prototype, not evidence that XYO uses the same approach. Read the preprint.

Use cases and adoption claims
XYO names DePIN data validation, logistics and supply chains, location-based games and rewards, and event attendance as application areas. The cited documentation describes these as use cases; it does not independently establish a deployment or performance evaluation for each one.
XYO’s current “What is XYO?” documentation reports 10M+ installs worldwide and 5B+ XYO rewarded. The page describes COIN as its data-node app, but these figures should be read as XYO-reported statistics: installs are not necessarily active or unique network nodes, and the cited passage does not independently validate the totals or specify their measurement method. Is it a device you can buy?
No single physical product is implied by the term. The subject is a network and protocol concept, with software participation and developer pathways. A generic GPS tracker, Bluetooth beacon, or crypto wallet should not be treated as a location-proof device unless its compatibility with a particular network and its role in that network are established.
XYO’s official site describes developer and partner pathways, but the cited material does not establish a currently required or verified purpose-built node product. Explore XYO’s overview.

How to evaluate a location-network claim
When assessing a particular system, distinguish among a documented protocol, a live service, and independently measured performance. Look for details on the measurement method, witness independence, attack handling, privacy, calibration, and scaling. Vendor claims about anti-spoofing or adoption are relevant descriptions of the vendor’s position, but they should not be confused with independent verification.
