A data removal service helps you submit opt-out requests to people-search sites and data brokers so they stop displaying or using certain personal information in specified ways. Some services submit requests for you; you can also contact sites yourself. An opt-out is not the same as deleting the underlying public record, and it does not guarantee that copies disappear from every other site.
What a data removal service does
Data brokers collect personal information from varied public and non-public sources and provide it to other businesses. People-search sites compile that information into reports, drawing on sources that can include other brokers, public social profiles, and government records. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes people-search sites as a type of data broker. The FTC’s description of the data broker industry and its consumer guide to people-search sites explain how this information can be collected and presented.
A data removal service’s core job is to handle opt-out requests for a customer. Depending on the service, it may submit those requests on the customer’s behalf or provide instructions for making them. An opt-out asks a particular site to stop listing or using your information under its opt-out process; it is not a universal deletion command.
What “removal” does—and does not—mean
- It can affect a particular site’s listing. A site-level opt-out may result in that site removing or suppressing a profile, according to its own process.
- It does not erase the source record. The FTC cautions that opting out of people-search sites does not remove public records from government websites.
- It does not automatically reach every other site. Your information may remain with other brokers or people-search sites, which can have separate opt-out processes. See the FTC’s guidance on opting out of people-search sites.
- It is not necessarily a legal deletion right. This practical description refers to site-level opt-outs. Whether a person has a legally defined deletion right, and the rules and deadlines that apply, depend on jurisdiction and eligibility.
Can a service opt out for you?
Yes. The FTC notes that consumers may pay a service to opt out of people-search sites. A service can take on the work of submitting requests, while individuals can also make requests themselves. The exact sites covered, the way requests are handled, and the status information provided depend on the individual provider; do not assume that every service does the same work.

How to evaluate a data removal service
Before choosing one, check its current terms and ask concrete questions about the work it performs:
- Which people-search sites and data categories does it cover?
- Does it submit opt-out requests for you, or only give you instructions?
- How does it report request status or completion?
- What does it do if a listing reappears?
- What identity information does it require for verification, and how does it handle that information?
- What are the price, renewal, and cancellation terms?
Be cautious about promises of comprehensive or permanent removal. In a past enforcement case, the FTC said US Search had charged consumers based on a false promise that their records could be “locked” so other people could not see or buy them. The settlement barred misrepresentations about the effectiveness of its removal services. That case is a warning about claims, not evidence about every service available today. Why information can keep circulating
Data brokerage can involve large and changing collections. In a 2014 report, the FTC described one broker it studied as holding more than 1.4 billion consumer transactions and 700 billion data elements, and another as adding more than 3 billion data points to its database each month. These are historical figures about companies in that study, not current industry-wide measurements. The FTC also characterized consumer choices about this data as largely invisible and incomplete.
