A crypto soft fork is a change to a network’s consensus rules that makes some blocks or transactions valid under the old rules invalid under the new rules. Because the new rules narrow the set of valid activity, nodes running the old rules may still accept blocks produced under the change—but they do not necessarily enforce the new restrictions or validate every new feature.
What is a soft fork?
A soft fork changes the consensus rules that participating nodes use to judge blocks or transactions. After the change, anything invalid under the old rules remains invalid, while some activity that used to be valid is no longer valid. In set terms, the new valid set is a subset of the old valid set.
The Bitcoin Developer Documentation glossary defines the term this way: “A softfork is a change to the bitcoin protocol wherein only previously valid blocks/transactions are made invalid. Since old nodes will recognise the new blocks as valid, a softfork is backward-compatible.” This definition describes Bitcoin; the underlying idea of narrowing consensus rules applies more broadly, but activation details vary by network and proposal.
How is a soft fork different from a hard fork?
The key difference is the direction in which the rule change moves the boundary between valid and invalid activity. A soft fork tightens the rules. A hard fork allows at least some blocks or structures that the old rules would reject.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Question | Soft fork | Hard fork |
|---|---|---|
| How does the valid set change? | It narrows: some previously valid blocks or transactions become invalid under the new rules. | It expands or otherwise changes incompatibly: at least some structures invalid under the old rules become valid under the new rules. |
| What may a non-upgraded node do? | It may accept blocks created under the tighter rules because those blocks can still satisfy its older, broader rules. | It can reject blocks allowed by the new rules if they violate the old rules. |
| Does an old node enforce the new rules? | No. It continues checking the rules it knows, so it may not enforce the new restrictions or validate new data. | No. It follows its old rules and may reject activity accepted by upgraded nodes. |
| How is it activated? | Depends on the network and proposal. Bitcoin has used user-enforcement and miner-signalling approaches. | Depends on the network and proposal; the defining distinction is incompatibility in what the rules allow, not a specific activation method. |
Bitcoin Core’s 2016 explanation of Segregated Witness and the Bitcoin Improvement Proposals on consensus-layer changes and fork terminology describe this valid-set distinction. A hard fork can cause a lasting chain split if groups continue following incompatible rules, but a split is a possible consequence—not the definition of a hard fork.
Do old nodes accept a soft fork?
They can accept blocks produced under the new rules, which is why a soft fork is called backward-compatible. But acceptance is not the same as full enforcement: old software checks only the rules it already implements and may not understand or validate the feature introduced by the change.

Bitcoin’s Segregated Witness (SegWit) illustrates the caveat. The deployed soft fork is specified in BIP 141. Non-upgraded nodes do not see or validate witness data and treat witness programs as anyone-can-spend scripts; upgraded nodes apply the intended witness rules. In other words, an old node may follow the same chain while providing weaker validation assurances about the new feature.
How are soft forks activated?
Activation is not part of the definition: the method depends on the network and the particular proposal. For Bitcoin, documented approaches include user-activated soft forks, where nodes begin enforcing the new rules at a preset time or block height, and miner-activated soft forks, where activation follows miner signalling. BIP 9 describes version bits used to track backward-compatible changes in parallel.

These are Bitcoin deployment mechanisms, not universal rules for cryptocurrency networks. A threshold or schedule used by one proposal should not be assumed to apply to another.

No. “Fork” can refer to a consensus-rule change, but it can also mean a temporary split in the block history. Under the same rules, two miners or validators may produce competing blocks; the network may later settle on one chain. That ordinary block fork does not, by itself, mean the protocol rules changed.

For Bitcoin’s terminology and deployment context, see the Bitcoin Developer Guide discussion of soft forks. Distinguishing a rules change from a temporary competing-block event prevents the word “fork” from implying a permanent split where none occurred.
