A connected Blu-ray player is a Blu-ray disc player that can join a home network or the internet, usually through Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or both, depending on the model. The connection can enable features such as BD-Live content, software updates, or model-specific online services. You do not need internet access to play an ordinary Blu-ray disc.
What “connected” means
“Connected Blu-ray player” describes a player with network capability; it is not a formal, uniform product class. The Blu-ray Disc Association includes network and internet connectivity among Blu-ray capabilities. In practice, the wording can refer to a player that is network-capable, already connected to a home network, or able to reach the internet after setup. Those are not necessarily the same thing.
A network-capable player does not automatically include built-in Wi-Fi, have every streaming app, or guarantee that a particular online service is still available. The exact capabilities depend on the model and region.
What can internet connectivity do?
Access BD-Live features on supported discs
BD-Live is an online feature available on some Blu-ray discs. When a compatible player is connected to the internet, a BD-Live-enabled disc can use its menu to access studio-server content. Examples include games, chats, downloadable features, quizzes, and trailers. The available content varies by disc and country. Philips explains BD-Live.

Both the disc and player must support the feature. Storage needs also vary: Sony’s instructions for one class of players call for an external memory device with at least 1 GB available, but that is not a universal requirement. Check Sony’s device-specific BD-Live instructions for the models they cover.
Install software updates or use model-specific services
Some players use a network connection for software updates or online services. Streaming apps are not guaranteed simply because a player is described as connected. For example, a Philips product page lists Netflix, Vudu, and YouTube for the BDP2305/F7; that example applies to that model listing, not to all Blu-ray players or to current app availability. Do you need internet to watch a Blu-ray?
No. Disney Studios Help says an internet connection is not needed for ordinary Blu-ray playback; it is needed only for value-added features on a disc. A connection matters when you want to use a supported online feature, not simply to play a standard disc. Read Disney Studios Help’s guidance.
How a connected player joins your network
The connection method depends on the specific player. Sony describes both wired Ethernet and wireless network setups. For a wired connection, run a network cable from the router to the player’s LAN port. Some LAN-ready models may need additional wireless equipment to connect over Wi-Fi. Check the model’s Sony setup guidance before choosing a connection method.

What to check before choosing a player
- Network hardware: Confirm whether the exact model has a LAN/Ethernet port, built-in Wi-Fi, or requires an optional wireless adapter.
- Online features: Look up the specific services and functions supported by the model and region; do not assume that “connected” means it has a particular app.
- BD-Live support: If you want disc-linked online extras, confirm support on both the player and the discs you plan to use.
- Storage: Check whether BD-Live uses internal storage or needs a USB memory device, and follow the instructions for that player.
The Blu-ray Disc Association’s overview of Blu-ray capabilities describes network/internet connectivity as one capability of the format. That does not make online access a requirement for ordinary disc playback.
