A command-line script is a saved text file of instructions that an interpreter runs in a command-line environment. It can hold one command or a sequence of commands, making work easier to repeat or automate. “Command-line script” is a broad description, not the name of one universal language or file format.
What a command-line script is
A script contains instructions for an interpreter, commonly a command shell. The GNU Bash Reference Manual defines a shell script as “a text file containing shell commands.” Microsoft similarly describes a PowerShell script as a plain-text file containing one or more PowerShell commands.
The term depends on the language: a Bash script contains Bash commands, a PowerShell script contains PowerShell commands, and a Python script contains Python code that can be run through the Python interpreter. Each language has its own conventions, extensions, and ways to start a script.
A command typed directly into an open shell is a one-off instruction. Saving one or more commands in a file lets you run them again, share them, or combine them into a repeatable task. Apple describes shell scripts as a way to perform commands that could otherwise be entered at the command line and combine tasks for repeated use.

How scripts differ from command-line programs
“Command-line” describes how someone interacts with a program; it does not tell you how the program is implemented. A command-line program might be a native executable, a command built into a shell, or a script interpreted by that shell or another runtime. PowerShell documentation distinguishes native executable files from shell-specific commands and scripts.
For example, a shell can launch a compiled program as well as interpret a shell-script file. A script is therefore one kind of command-line tool, not a synonym for every program launched from a terminal.

How a command-line script runs
The exact method depends on the interpreter and operating system. Bash documents both passing a file to Bash and making a file executable and invoking it as a command. On systems that support the convention, a first-line shebang beginning with #! can identify the interpreter for direct execution.
For example, Bash can be asked to run a file by passing its name to the interpreter. Directly invoking a script as a command is another option when the file and system are set up for it; executable permission is not required when you run the file through the interpreter.

PowerShell scripts are run by typing the path and file name. A script file commonly uses the .ps1 extension. On Windows, PowerShell’s execution policy can prevent scripts from running; Microsoft notes that this policy does not apply to PowerShell on non-Windows platforms. This is a PowerShell-specific consideration, not a requirement that applies to every command-line script.
How scripts receive input
Scripts can accept arguments so the person running them can provide input or options instead of editing the file. In Bash and POSIX shell conventions, arguments are available through positional parameters: parameter zero represents the command name, followed by the arguments. PowerShell scripts can accept parameters after the script name, and Python scripts can also be run with command-line arguments.

Quoting rules vary by shell. If a value contains spaces and should be treated as one argument, it usually needs appropriate quoting for that shell. The precise syntax is language- and environment-specific, so follow the documentation for the interpreter you are using.

These examples are not interchangeable: each interpreter understands its own language, and invocation, parameter, and quoting syntax differ. The shell or runtime documentation for the relevant platform is the right guide for those details.
