A clock distribution network carries a timing signal from its source to the registers and other destinations that need it. It fans out the clock so synchronous components can coordinate operations. The network may be on a chip, inside an FPGA or SoC, or across a circuit board; its structure depends on the device and design.

What a clock distribution network does

A clock source generates a periodic signal. The distribution network routes that signal and, where necessary, buffers or fans it out to clock pins on storage elements such as registers. Synchronous logic uses the clock edges as shared timing references.

In an idealized system, the relevant clock edges would reach their destinations together. In a physical design, path lengths, load differences, process variation, and noise can make arrival times differ. The network’s job is therefore not merely to connect a source to many destinations: its implementation also affects the timing conditions seen by the logic.

Clock distribution network vs. clock tree

A clock tree is one possible topology within a clock distribution network. A tree branches from a source through progressively smaller groups of destinations, often using buffers. “Clock distribution network” is broader: depending on context, it can include source-side and device-specific distribution infrastructure as well as the branches that reach individual loads. Define the intended scope when precision matters.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Other structures include regular H-tree and X-tree arrangements, which aim to provide equal source-to-leaf path lengths in an ideal layout, and grid or mesh networks. Real layouts and loads can depart from ideal symmetry. FPGA and SoC devices may instead provide dedicated clocking resources such as roots, regions, spines, and buffers.

Skew, jitter, and insertion delay

Skew: a difference between destinations

Clock skew is the difference in clock arrival times at destinations. For timing analysis, the important comparison is often between sequentially adjacent registers connected by a data path, not every pair of endpoints across an entire chip. Unequal arrival times can reduce the time available for data to move between registers.

Jitter: variation in an edge’s timing

Jitter is uncertainty or variation in where a clock edge occurs over time. It is different from skew: skew is an arrival-time offset between destinations, while jitter describes edge timing variation. Power-supply noise, crosstalk, physical layout, process variation, and unbalanced loading can contribute to clocking problems. onsemi notes qualitatively that large jitter and skew reduce a system’s maximum operating frequency; it does not give a universal frequency penalty.

Insertion delay: time through the network

Insertion delay, also called clock latency in relevant contexts, is the time a clock takes to propagate from its source through the distribution network. A network can have significant insertion delay while keeping paths balanced, or relatively little delay while still having poor balance. Delay and skew are related design concerns, but they are not interchangeable measurements.

How implementation varies by platform

FPGA and SoC clock routing

Clock routing is architecture-specific. AMD’s UltraScale documentation describes dedicated clock routing and distribution resources: a signal travels through routing segments to a clock root, then through vertical and horizontal distribution resources toward loads. In AMD’s documented architecture, the root is generally selected to reduce skew, and placement may be adjusted for skew optimization. This describes UltraScale guidance, not a universal rule for all chips.

Intel’s Agilex guide describes automatically configured, skew-balanced clock trees routed among clock sectors. In that architecture, insertion delay depends on the clock resources required and increases with distance to the furthest destination; worst-case skew between branches may also grow with delay. These details should not be generalized beyond the documented architecture.

Board-level clock distribution

On a circuit board or system, a master clock may feed clock-distribution circuitry that fans clocks out to processors, ASICs, FPGAs, and memory. The chain can also include functions such as delay, division, and translation. The relevant network can therefore span more than one device rather than existing only inside a chip.
