A charge-coupled device (CCD) is a semiconductor image sensor: it collects electrical charge created by light in individual pixel locations, then transfers that charge to readout electronics for measurement. Those measurements represent pixel brightness and can be assembled into an image. “Charged coupled device” is a common search phrasing; the standard technical term is charge-coupled device.
What does CCD stand for?
CCD stands for charge-coupled device. It is a semiconductor device often used as an image sensor. In a camera system, the CCD is the component that senses light; it is not the whole camera. Optics focus an image onto the detector, and readout electronics process the detector’s signal. NASA explains CCD cameras and their role in imaging.
How does a CCD sensor work?
1. Light creates charge
When light reaches the photosensitive material, it creates electrical charge carriers. The sensor holds charge in regions associated with its pixels during exposure. The amount collected at each location corresponds to the light received there.

After exposure, electrical control signals move packets of charge from one location to the next, toward an output register and amplifier. NASA describes this as a step-by-step transfer; the output electronics measure the charge and convert it into a signal representing pixel brightness. A NASA technical report describes the CCD structure and transfer process.

- Sensor cleaning: compatible with all DSLR cameras and mirrorless cameras
- Lens Cleaning: it can be Used not only for the sensor but also for removing dust on the Lens surface.
- Easily remove dust: dust attached by static electricity that cannot be removed with a blower can be easily removed.
- Easy to use: for dust and oils removal, cleaning with urethane resin is easier to use than cleaning kits with ethanol.
- Easy operation: touch the urethane resin to the sensor as if you were pressing the shutter button
A brief analogy is a bucket brigade: each pixel passes its charge along until it reaches the readout circuit. Unlike people passing buckets, the actual device moves electrical charge under controlled voltages. NASA/JPL uses the bucket-brigade analogy to explain CCD charge transfer.
3. Measurements form an image
The output circuit measures each packet, producing a sequence of brightness values. Imaging equipment can assemble those values into an image. A CCD therefore senses light and supplies measurements; lenses, electronics, and other camera components are also needed to capture and process an image.

What is the difference between CCD and CMOS?
CCD and CMOS refer to different image-sensor architectures, especially how pixel signals are read. In NASA’s comparison, a CCD transfers pixel charge to an output amplifier, while a CMOS active-pixel sensor has amplifiers within pixels and can read pixels directly. NASA’s overview compares the two readout approaches.

| Architecture | How the signal is read | Considerations in NASA’s comparison |
|---|---|---|
| CCD | Pixel charge is transferred through the sensor to an output amplifier. | Can produce high-quality images suited to scientific use, but requires power and efficient charge transfer. |
| CMOS active-pixel sensor | Amplifiers are located within pixels, which can be read directly. | The architecture reduces power needs and charge-transfer concerns in the comparison. |
These are architectural distinctions, not a universal ranking. Image quality, power use, and suitability depend on the specific sensor design, generation, and application.

Where are CCDs used?
CCDs are used in scientific and spacecraft imaging, as well as in camera systems such as astronomy-oriented instruments. NASA describes detector arrangements made as two-dimensional arrays or as single lines. A line detector can build a two-dimensional image as a scene passes across it—for example, as a spacecraft moves over a planetary surface. NASA’s spacecraft-detector chapter explains these imaging arrangements.
Because CCD describes a sensor technology rather than every camera, check a camera’s specifications before assuming it uses a CCD. The term “CCD camera” means a camera system built around a charge-coupled-device sensor.
