A bug fix is a change to software that corrects behavior that is incorrect or unintended. The term can mean the corrective code change itself; people also use it more loosely for the update or release that delivers the correction.
What does “bug fix” mean?
A bug is a defect that causes software to behave incorrectly or contrary to its specification. A bug fix is the change made to correct that behavior. The Semantic Versioning 2.0.0 specification defines a bug fix as “an internal change that fixes incorrect behavior.” Semantic Versioning 2.0.0
For example, suppose an app crashes when someone submits a login form with an empty password, even though it should show a validation message. The crash is the defect; changing the app to display the expected message is the bug fix.
How is a bug fix different from a patch?
A bug fix names the correction. A patch usually names a way that a change is delivered, or the change package itself. NIST’s glossary describes a patch, in one usage, as an immediate solution to an identified problem; it notes that developers may later include a more complete solution in a subsequent release. The glossary records multiple source-specific meanings, so the precise sense depends on context. NIST glossary: patch

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Patching is broader than fixing an ordinary application bug: it can address security or functionality problems and may also add capabilities. A patch can contain a bug fix, but the terms are not interchangeable. NIST glossary: patching
How does a bug relate to a fault, error, weakness, or vulnerability?
In general conversation, “bug” often stands in for any software defect. In security engineering, the terms can describe different parts of a chain. NIST’s Bugs Framework distinguishes a bug from a fault, an error, a weakness, and a vulnerability: a vulnerability may result when a bug propagates into behavior that can be exploited. These terms are related, but they do not mean the same thing. NIST Bugs Framework

What happens during a bug fix?
A practical repair follows the report from symptom through verification. GitHub Spec Kit documents an assess–fix–test workflow and emphasizes checking the result against the original reproduction. This is one documented approach, not a universal required process. GitHub Spec Kit documentation
- Record the report. Capture what happened, the steps that reproduce it, and what should have happened instead.
- Assess the cause. Determine whether the behavior is a defect and identify the cause before choosing a remedy.
- Make a scoped correction. Change the software to address the assessed cause without introducing unrelated changes.
- Verify the report. Repeat the original reproduction, run relevant tests, and record the evidence that the expected behavior now occurs.
Debugging is the activity of determining the nature and location of a program error so it can be corrected. That description appears in a 1995 FDA-hosted glossary and is best understood as a general explanation rather than a claim about a currently maintained standard. Does a bug fix change the software’s version number?
Under Semantic Versioning 2.0.0, a backward-compatible bug fix increments the patch component of the version. For example, a release numbered 1.4.2 becomes 1.4.3 if it introduces only backward-compatible bug fixes. The specification uses a minor increment for backward-compatible public API additions and a major increment for backward-incompatible public API changes. These are Semantic Versioning rules; a project using another versioning scheme may label releases differently. Semantic Versioning 2.0.0
