A 1 pulse per second (1PPS) clock is usually a timing reference, not a standalone clock or display. It produces one electrical pulse each second—normally using its rising edge to mark the exact second boundary. The pulse tells equipment when a second occurs, but usually not which second. A serial time message, NTP/PTP, or another time code supplies the date, time-of-day, timescale, and leap-second information.

What “1 pulse per second” means

1PPS, 1 pps, and pulse-per-second describe a waveform with one defined timing event every second. The receiving device normally timestamps the selected edge, most often the rising edge. Pulse width, voltage, polarity, connector, drive capability, and impedance depend on the equipment.

The rate alone does not establish precision. A microcontroller timer producing a nominal 1 Hz signal and a GNSS-disciplined receiver can both output one pulse per second, while their absolute timing, jitter, and long-term stability differ enormously. Safran describes 1PPS as a precise metronome for system time, distinct from a continuous 10 MHz frequency reference (Safran SecureSync documentation).

Why 1PPS is not a complete clock

A bare line of pulses generally carries no hour, minute, date, or epoch label. It does not inherently say whether a pulse represents 12:00:00 UTC, GPS system time, or another timescale. Trimble documents its 1PPS strobe together with an ASCII time-tag message: the message identifies the second and the pulse marks its precise boundary (Trimble 1PPS pinout and time-tag documentation).

Think of 1PPS as a metronome tick. A time message says which numbered beat it is. A usable computer timing system normally combines both: serial or network data establishes absolute time, while the hardware pulse corrects phase with much less uncertainty than software scheduling alone.

1PPS compared with related timing signals

Signal or protocol What it provides Typical use
1PPS Physical second boundary Hardware timestamps, triggers, phase alignment
1 Hz Something repeating once per second; reference quality is unspecified Control or general timing
NMEA or other serial time message Readable date, time, and status Giving software the identity of each second
NTP Network clock synchronization Computers on ordinary IP networks
PTP (IEEE 1588) Precision network synchronization with hardware timestamping options Industrial, telecom, measurement, and other demanding networks
IRIG-B and similar codes Encoded time information over a physical link Industrial and legacy systems
5 or 10 MHz Continuous frequency reference, not a second label Radios, synthesizers, counters, and test equipment

NIST describes disciplined systems that distribute synchronized 1PPS alongside 5 MHz or 10 MHz and can provide NTP, PTP, or time-code services (NIST disciplined oscillator; NIST TMAS).

How a GNSS 1PPS system works

Basic GNSS receiver

A GPS/GNSS receiver uses satellite signals to calculate time and outputs 1PPS, often alongside NMEA or another serial message. It suits embedded projects, timestamping, and instruments with an outdoor antenna location. It still depends on antenna view, cable installation, receiver configuration, and a valid satellite solution.

GPSDO or GNSSDO

A disciplined oscillator combines GNSS long-term accuracy with a local quartz or oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO). GNSS corrects the oscillator slowly; the oscillator provides cleaner short-term behavior and can continue in holdover during a temporary outage. Such units commonly provide both 1PPS and 10 MHz.

Network timing appliance

A timing server can accept GNSS and 1PPS, then distribute time to many clients by NTP or PTP. This hybrid architecture is often more practical than running a separate pulse cable to every computer. Network delay and asymmetry mean NTP/PTP is not electrically equivalent to a direct 1PPS input.

How accurate can 1PPS be?

There is no universal 1PPS accuracy number. Evaluate each specification by separating:

  • Pulse or phase accuracy: alignment of the selected edge to UTC or another stated timescale.
  • Jitter: short-term pulse-to-pulse variation.
  • Frequency stability: how steadily the local oscillator runs.
  • Holdover: error growth after GNSS is lost.
  • Installation effects: antenna multipath, receiver survey, cable delay, thresholds, and distribution hardware.

Published examples are not interchangeable. NIST describes approximately ±20 ns peak-to-peak variation for one disciplined-oscillator description (NIST). Its TMAS page states about 5 ns time uncertainty for a specialized quartz-clock configuration with multiple outputs (TMAS). Spectrum Instruments advertises ±2.5 ns PPS accuracy for particular GPS-disciplined products (Spectrum Instruments). These are attributed product or service specifications—not a promise that every GPS receiver is accurate to a few nanoseconds.

Ask whether a number is RMS, one-sigma, peak-to-peak, or a maximum; identify the reference timescale and test point; and check whether antenna, cable, multipath, and measurement uncertainty are included. Display resolution is not accuracy.

What can 1PPS synchronize?

  • Hardware event timestamps and data-acquisition samples.
  • Instrument triggers and phase alignment.
  • Distributed sensors and radio or telecom equipment.
  • Local oscillator disciplining.
  • Calibration and comparison of time servers.
  • A hardware reference for an NTP/PTP master.

NIST documents UTC-synchronized 1PPS use for comparing external time servers and distributing traceable time and frequency (NIST technical document).

Connecting 1PPS safely

  1. Read the exact equipment manuals. Confirm whether the port is an input, output, or bidirectional connection.
  2. Identify the electrical interface: 3.3 V or 5 V logic, TTL/CMOS, RS-422, or another standard. Never assume a connector marked PPS is universally compatible.
  3. Confirm pinout, ground reference, polarity, active edge, pulse width, input threshold, drive capability, isolation, and required termination.
  4. Connect the serial or network time source as well as 1PPS when absolute time is required.
  5. Wait for a valid GNSS/time-lock indication; some receivers emit pulses before their time solution is valid.
  6. Verify that the time tag and pulse refer to the same epoch, then measure at the receiving device if precision matters.
  7. Configure the operating system, driver, or timing appliance and monitor lock, alarm, and holdover status.

At high precision, cable length and propagation delay matter. The specified timing point may be the receiver connector, antenna reference, instrument input, or a calibrated internal point.

Common failure modes

No pulse

Check output enable settings, valid-time status, power, pinout, ground, termination, and whether the port is actually an input or output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pulse present but time is wrong

A pulse without a correctly paired time message can produce an off-by-one-second or arbitrary date. Check UTC versus GPS time, leap-second handling, message-to-pulse epoch rules, and receiver validity.

Missed or double-triggered pulses

Investigate voltage thresholds, rise time, cable loading, shielding, termination, fan-out, and software timestamping. RS-422 must not be wired as if it were single-ended TTL.

Excessive jitter or drift

Look for poor antenna placement, multipath, interference, cable faults, an unlocked receiver, or operation in holdover. Buildings, roofs, vehicles, jamming, and spoofing can all degrade GNSS timing.

Examples include Trimble professional GNSS receivers (documentation), Safran SecureSync (documentation), Spectrum Instruments references (product family), and Quartzlock 1PPS locking modules (module page). Public prices were not established for those product families.

A NIST shop listing for a referenced service showed $1,162 on August 18, 2026; it is a page-observed service price, not a complete deployment cost. The listing specifies an always-on Internet connection with a dedicated IP address, an outdoor GPS antenna, and a 5 or 10 MHz source (NIST service listing).

Can a Raspberry Pi, Arduino, or microcontroller generate 1PPS?

Yes. A hardware timer, crystal, RTC, or GNSS input can generate a one-second pulse. A software GPIO loop is less predictable because operating-system scheduling and interrupt latency move the edge. A locally generated 1 Hz signal is not UTC-referenced unless it is disciplined by GNSS or another external standard, and a general-purpose GPIO should not be presented as a nanosecond instrument.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1PPS the same as 1 Hz?

It has the same nominal repetition rate, but 1PPS normally implies a defined timing reference. Ordinary 1 Hz says only that something repeats once per second.

Can 1PPS set a computer clock?

It can improve phase when paired with a time-of-day message and suitable timing hardware or software. The pulse alone cannot establish the date or time-of-day.

Does 1PPS include the date?

Usually no. Use a serial message, NTP/PTP, IRIG, or another time code for the epoch label.

Do I need 1PPS if I already have NTP?

Not necessarily. NTP is adequate for many computers; 1PPS is useful when hardware timestamping, tighter phase alignment, or traceable local timing is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between 1PPS and 10 MHz?

1PPS marks each second boundary. 10 MHz supplies a continuous frequency reference. Precision systems often distribute both.
