A 10-foot user interface (10-foot UI) is a screen design built for television viewing from across a room. The phrase assumes the viewer sits roughly ten feet from the screen and usually navigates with a remote control rather than a mouse, keyboard, or touchscreen. It describes a design context, not a measured rule, and it is the main reason TV apps often look and behave differently from their phone and desktop versions.
What the term means
“10-foot” refers to the distance between the viewer and the screen. Amazon’s Fire TV design guidelines say TV interfaces are often called 10-foot UIs because viewers sit ten or more feet away, and that TV use calls for different design choices than desktop, tablet, or phone use.
Android’s definition of its television platform uses the same framing. The Android Open Source Project’s Android 10 Compatibility Definition describes an Android Television device as:
an entertainment interface for consuming digital media, movies, games, apps, and/or live TV for users sitting about ten feet away (a “lean back” or “10-foot user interface”).

Two ideas sit inside that definition. The first is the living-room viewing context. The second is that the interface is operated from a distance, through a remote control rather than direct pointing or touch.
Why “ten feet” is an approximation
The figure is a rounded planning baseline. Fire TV guidance says “ten or more feet,” while Android’s definition says “about ten feet.” Neither source sets a precise optimal distance, and real rooms vary. A sofa close to a wall-mounted screen and a seat across a large room are both TV viewing, but they call for different text sizes and spacing. Treat ten feet as the starting assumption and check readability at the seat that actually matters.

How distance changes interface design
Legibility
Text, icons, and selection states have to be readable from the seat, not just on a laptop held at arm’s length. Microsoft Press’s sample chapter from Windows 8.1 Inside Out makes the same basic point by contrasting TV viewing with close-range devices. That source is historical explanatory context rather than current platform guidance, but the principle holds across TV platforms.

A remote moves focus from one item to the next with directional buttons. That makes the current selection the most important visual element on the screen: the highlighted item must be obvious at a glance. Designs that depend on a pointer or precise touch do not translate to this input. Android’s definition establishes that the interface is controlled remotely; the focus treatment itself is a design implication of that model rather than a requirement the definition spells out.

If a remote fails, the interface becomes difficult or impossible to use. Replacement remotes differ by device and pairing method, so confirm compatibility with your specific TV or streaming device before buying.
Information density
Fire TV guidance recommends simple, clear screens with a limited number of elements. Controls should be large and well spaced enough to read and select from a distance. Long text blocks and unnecessary input steps work against that goal.

Effort to reach content
Amazon’s guidance frames TV use as relaxed and focused on reaching content. A good 10-foot layout shortens the path from the home screen to playback, rather than asking the viewer to hunt through dense menus.
