In 2019, Inspur presented an Open Accelerator Module (OAM) Universal Baseboard (UBB) as a shared platform for building accelerator systems with different device configurations. ServeTheHome identified the ON5388M5 as its reference system and reported support for up to eight connected devices. The announcement showed an open-platform approach, not proof of a formally adopted industry-wide standard or universal compatibility.
What are OAM and a UBB?
OAM, or Open Accelerator Module, is an accelerator-module ecosystem intended to give system designers options beyond a single proprietary accelerator platform. The UBB, or Universal Baseboard, is the shared board that connects accelerator devices within a system. In its September 2019 report, ServeTheHome’s announcement coverage placed the design in the broader Open Accelerator Infrastructure (OAI) and OAM context, describing modules such as GPUs and AI accelerators.
The design goal was flexibility: the board could support different accelerator topologies rather than one fixed arrangement. Inspur server-business deputy general manager Alan Chang explained the intended appeal in a September 2019 interview: “OAM allows the end-user to pick the best technology fitting their needs rather than picking a lot of different proprietary stuff and then spending a lot of money trying to figure out what’s going on.” The statement describes the rationale for OAM, not a guarantee that every vendor’s module would interoperate.
What did Inspur announce?
At the OCP Regional Summit in Amsterdam in September 2019, Inspur presented an OAM UBB as part of its technology announcements. ServeTheHome reported that the board offered connectivity for up to eight devices, supported multiple accelerator topologies, and included external connectivity. The device count is a reported design capacity, not an independently tested performance result.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Dual CPU Sockets: This C612 chipset server motherboard is designed with dual CPU sockets, which can support Xeon E5 V3/V4 series processors. (Note: Core i7 not support Dual-CPU mode, if only one CPU is installed, please install it in the left slot)
- DDR4 Memory Slots: The memory slots of the LGA 2011-v3 motherboard is designed with 8-channel, which can support DDR4, DDR4 ECC, DDR4 RECC RAM. It supports effective frequencies is 2133/2400MHz, and the maximum capacity is 256GB. (Note: When use E5 v4 CPU, can not support Desktop DDR4 RAM)
- PCIe 3.0 Protocol: Equipped with 2 PCIe 3.0 X16 graphics card slots (with steel case), and 1 PCIe 3.0 X8, 2 PCIe 2.0 X1. The transfer rate can reach 15.754 GB/s. Equipped with 2 M.2 hard disk slots, which can achieve fast reading even if multiple programs are running
- Stable Power Supply: The X99 Dual CPU motherboard use 24+8+8pin standard power supply interface, 8-phase power supply. Precise modularization provides good heat dissipation and makes the program run more stably
- Strong Expandability: The X99 gaming motherboard is equipped with multiple expansion interfaces to ensure that the motherboard has more room for improvement, include 4*USB 3.0 ports, 2*USB 2.0 ports, 8*SATA 3.0 ports, 2*network ports
The report identified the Inspur ON5388M5 as the UBB reference system. It described the reference platform as including power delivery and air cooling for the modules. The available reporting does not provide thermal test results, power-efficiency measurements, or benchmark data, so the architecture should not be mistaken for evidence of a performance advantage.
Which systems were based on the UBB?
ServeTheHome named Baidu X-Man 4.0 as a design based on the Inspur UBB, describing it as an updated platform developed jointly with Baidu. In the interview, Chang said the project was developed with Baidu and expressed hope for wider customer adoption. That establishes a reported design and a stated expectation in 2019; it does not establish later deployments or adoption.

What does “sets a new standard” mean here?
In this context, “standard” is best read as a description of the open-platform approach, not a claim that the Inspur UBB became an industry-wide standard. The 2019 reports document a vendor reference design and its place in the OAM ecosystem. They do not establish formal industry-wide adoption, present-day cross-vendor compatibility, or whether the ON5388M5 is currently available.
For a procurement decision, openness is a proposition to verify against the actual system and modules under consideration. Ask vendors or an authorized integrator for documentation covering:

- Host connectivity, power delivery, and cooling requirements.
- Serviceability and software support for the selected configuration.
- Total system cost and current product availability.
The cited reports do not supply a current supported-module list or like-for-like comparisons with proprietary platforms on these points.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unknown from the 2019 reports?
- Benchmarks or measured performance comparisons.
- Energy-efficiency figures or measured thermal results.
- Current system status, pricing, and module compatibility.
- Verified adoption of Baidu X-Man 4.0 after the interview.
These limits matter because an eight-device capacity figure and a flexible topology describe platform design, not throughput, cooling effectiveness, or customer adoption. The announcement overview and interview are historical reports from September 2019, not current product documentation.
