India’s 107 medals at the Hangzhou 2023 Asian Games—28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze—made it the country’s first Asian Games campaign to pass 100 medals. That is a historic achievement at that edition, but the total alone cannot show how evenly Indian sport improved, how close India came to Asia’s leading teams on every measure, or whether the result predicts Olympic success.
How many medals did India win at the 2023 Asian Games?
India won 107 medals in Hangzhou: 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze, according to the Press Information Bureau (PIB). It finished fourth in the medal table. The total was a national record and the first time India crossed 100 medals at the Asian Games.

The PIB’s edition comparison shows the scale of the increase, but also that the Indian contingent grew at the same time:
| Edition | Indian medals | Indian athletes |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 | 57 | 541 |
| 2018 | 69 | 570 |
| 2023 | 107 (28 gold, 38 silver, 41 bronze) | 655 |
These figures, reported by the PIB, establish that both the medal total and contingent size rose. They do not establish why either changed, or whether the athletes’ results improved when adjusted for the larger team.

What does India’s Asian Games medal count say about sporting success?
It shows a major achievement at one edition
A record 107 medals and a fourth-place finish are strong evidence of success in Hangzhou. The number describes India’s results across that Games; it is not a complete score for the condition of Indian sport.
Rank and total answer different questions
A medal total counts India’s awards, while rank shows its position relative to other delegations under the medal-table rules. India’s fourth place in 2023 was below its best Asian Games rank: second, achieved in 1951, according to Business Standard’s historical comparison. A record total therefore does not mean India achieved its best-ever rank.
Rank #2
The size and shape of the programme matter
Hangzhou featured 40 sports, 61 disciplines and 481 events, with athletes from 45 countries and regions, according to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) final report. Medal opportunities vary with the programme, so raw totals across editions are not directly comparable as if every Games offered the same events.

The OCA report says 41 of the 45 participating National Olympic Committees won at least one medal, which it described as the highest number ever at the time. That context shows how widely medals were distributed at Hangzhou; it does not by itself measure India’s standing in each sport.
Rank #3
A larger team changes the question
India sent 655 athletes to Hangzhou, which the PIB described as its largest-ever contingent at the time of its summary. The 2014 and 2018 teams numbered 541 and 570 athletes, respectively. A reader assessing performance beyond the headline total could also examine medals per athlete, final placings and how many athletes reached finals. Those measures need careful interpretation: the contingent and medal totals alone do not prove improved or diminished efficiency.
Does an Asian Games medal predict Olympic success?
Not on its own. The Asian Games and the Olympics do not have identical programmes, and success in one multi-sport event is not a validated forecast of another. A useful qualification comes from the Confederation of Sports and Recreation Industry (CSRI), which classified 73 of India’s 107 Hangzhou medals as coming from sports on that Olympic cycle’s programme and 34 from non-Olympic sports. This is the CSRI’s classification, not a universal OCA category; it shows why the overall Asian Games total should not be treated as an Olympic medal prediction.
Rank #4
That distinction does not make medals in non-Olympic sports less meaningful. It means that Olympic relevance must be considered sport by sport, alongside the relevant Olympic programme and results there. The 73-to-34 split is not evidence that the first group will yield Olympic medals, nor that the second group says nothing about Indian sporting achievement.

Why edition-to-edition medal comparisons need care
The Hangzhou programme’s 481 events are one reason to state the edition when quoting a total. Programme size and composition can change. For Aichi-Nagoya 2026, the OCA’s August 19, 2026 preview listed a planned programme of 43 sports, 71 disciplines and 469 events. That is planned information, not a final realised programme, and it should not be used as a direct like-for-like comparison with Hangzhou’s completed Games.
Comparisons are clearer when they keep several indicators separate rather than compressing them into one number:
- Total medals and golds: how many awards India won, and how many were gold.
- Medal-table rank: how India placed against other delegations.
- Contingent size: how many Indian athletes competed.
- Programme context: which sports and events offered medal opportunities.
- Sport-specific performance: placings, finalists and results in sports relevant to the comparison, including the applicable Olympic programme.
No single indicator here provides a complete, participation-adjusted ranking of sporting strength.
What the 107 medals cannot explain
The tally records outcomes; it does not identify their causes. On its own, it cannot show whether funding, participation, coaching, sports science, athlete development or another factor produced the result. Explaining those causes requires separate evidence. The defensible conclusion is narrower but still substantial: India achieved a historic medal total and fourth-place finish in Hangzhou, while broader claims about national sporting progress require more than the headline count.
