Flutter’s design-neutral widgets.dart library includes layout and interaction primitives you can combine into a split view, without using Material or Cupertino widgets for the split view itself. You supply the panes, sizing rules, divider, and behavior; Flutter’s layout constraints help you adapt the composition to available space.
What a design-neutral split view means
Flutter describes its UI as a composition of widgets. The widgets layer includes building blocks such as Row, Column, Stack, and GestureDetector, which can form the structure and interaction of a custom split view. See Flutter’s overview of building user interfaces and its guide to layouts.
“Design-neutral” does not mean the framework provides a complete, ready-made split-view component with every behavior included. It means the split view can be composed without relying on Material or Cupertino widgets. Your application defines the visual style and interaction contract.
What you need to define
Pane structure and sizing
Choose a horizontal or vertical arrangement and decide how the panes divide the available space. Specify minimum useful sizes and what should happen when the available area cannot satisfy them. A fixed ratio, fixed pane size, or user-adjustable ratio are application choices, not universal defaults.

Divider appearance and interaction
Build the divider to match your app’s design system. If it can be dragged, define its hit area, how dragging changes pane sizes, and how the divider communicates its purpose to assistive technology. The framework primitives make composition possible, but do not by themselves establish that your completed control is accessible or supports every input method.
State and platform behavior
Decide whether a user-adjusted ratio persists, and whether that state survives navigation or app restarts. Validate keyboard and pointer interaction, semantics, and platform support for your intended use. These are implementation requirements to test; the cited framework documentation does not certify a particular custom split view.

Adapt the layout to available space
LayoutBuilder provides the constraints from the parent at layout time, giving your layout logic information about the space available. Use those constraints to select a suitable arrangement rather than assuming a single breakpoint works for every app. See the LayoutBuilder API reference.
Flutter’s adaptive-layout tutorial demonstrates a sidebar-and-detail pattern. For a constrained screen, decide whether both panes remain visible, one becomes a separate route, or one appears as an overlay. Base that choice on minimum useful pane sizes and the task your interface supports. The tutorial’s example does not establish a universal width threshold.

A practical evaluation checklist
- Does the dependency tree avoid Material and Cupertino where required, rather than only presenting an independent-looking API?
- Can you enforce minimum pane sizes and respond cleanly when constraints are tight?
- Does resizing work with the input methods your users need, and is the divider’s purpose exposed through appropriate semantics?
- Does the layout have a clear narrow-screen fallback?
- Can the component preserve a user-adjusted ratio if that is a product requirement?
- Are its supported platforms, API, compatibility, and maintenance suitable for your project?
