A current driver’s license or state ID is the most widely recognized option. Passports, passport cards and military IDs are also accepted under many state rules. But no single list guarantees acceptance nationwide: state alcohol rules and the bar or restaurant’s own policy both matter.
Which IDs are commonly accepted?
State guidance reviewed for this article repeatedly lists driver’s licenses and state identification cards. Passports and military IDs are common alternatives. The details vary by jurisdiction, so these are common examples—not a promise that every venue must accept each document.

What can make an ID unacceptable?
Being government-issued is not always enough. The document may need to be current, unexpired, unaltered and show particular information. For example, California’s guidance says a bona fide ID must be current and include the holder’s name, date of birth, photograph and physical description. Washington requires a photo and date of birth, plus a signature except on federally issued ID; its rules do not allow expired documents. Idaho also specifies criteria for the IDs it recognizes.

REAL ID status alone is not a universal requirement for proving age at a bar. The cited state guidance focuses on the issuing authority, validity and information shown on the document.

Can a bar or restaurant refuse an ID that the state recognizes?
It may apply a stricter house policy than the legal minimum. California ABC specifically says a business can, for example, choose to accept only California driver’s licenses or identification cards, or require anyone purchasing alcohol to show ID regardless of age. Ask the venue if you are relying on an ID that is less common or covered by a special rule.
Checking practices also depend on jurisdiction and venue type. Texas TABC says age verification is mandatory for certain off-premises sales, while on-premises sellers should check IDs to avoid illegal service. Utah’s March 2026 update describes different requirements by license type: bars and taverns retain 100% checks, while restaurant checks apply to customers who appear 35 or younger under the rules described there. A rule for a retailer, bar or restaurant should not be assumed to apply to the others.

Do temporary or digital IDs work?
Do not assume a temporary credential or mobile ID will be accepted everywhere. California’s guidance lists interim or temporary licenses and DMV receipts as examples that do not count as bona fide identification under its standard. Montana agency guidance reported that mobile driver’s licenses and state IDs became acceptable there on September 1, 2025. Those contrasting examples show why acceptance depends on location and the credential. Check with the state alcohol regulator and the venue before you go.

How to check whether your ID will work
- Identify the jurisdiction. Check the alcohol regulator’s current guidance for the state where the bar or restaurant is located. State lists are not national guarantees.
- Check the document itself. Confirm it is current and unaltered, and that it shows the photo, birth date, signature or other information required under local rules.
- Ask the venue about your exact ID. Mention whether it is out of state, foreign, temporary or digital; a business may have a stricter policy.
- Bring a more commonly listed alternative if available. A current driver’s license or state ID, passport or passport card, or military ID appears in multiple state guidance sources, but local rules still control.
