Homeowners can reduce some wildfire exposure by clearing combustible debris, managing vegetation around the home, and following local defensible-space guidance. These steps lower nearby fuels; they do not guarantee a house will survive a wildfire or make it safe to ignore an evacuation order.
What defensible space can—and cannot—do
Defensible space is an area around a building where vegetation, debris, and other combustible fuels are treated or reduced. FEMA’s defensible-space fact sheet says its design depends on local vegetation, weather, and topography. The aim is to reduce nearby fuels and interrupt routes by which fire can spread toward a home.
Fire can move horizontally between shrubs and trees, and vertically from grasses and shrubs into tree crowns. Wind-driven embers are another hazard, so a managed yard cannot stop every way fire may threaten a building. Treat defensible space as one part of preparedness, not a guarantee.

1. Remove combustible debris
Clear accumulated leaves and needles from roofs, gutters, and decks, and remove combustible debris around the foundation. These are direct actions in the federal wildfire-preparedness guidance. Use safe access practices when working at height; the guidance does not specify a particular tool or method.

2. Break up connected vegetation
Keep vegetation from forming a continuous path from ground-level fuels toward the home or tree crowns. The federal guidance recommends removing vines and moving shrubs away from the sides of the house. Prune branches and manage plants in line with local recommendations for the property.
3. Reduce fuels where appropriate
Where local conditions make them suitable, lower-fuel breaks such as gravel paths, driveways, or maintained lawn areas can help interrupt vegetation. Which plants to remove, how much to clear, and what may legally be removed vary by location. Check local rules before doing substantial vegetation work.

Adjust the plan for slope and local conditions
A flat yard and a steep hillside do not present the same conditions. Ready.gov’s federal preparedness guidance says steeper slopes call for more open space, with additional space downhill from the home, because fire travels quickly uphill. It does not establish one distance or formula that fits every property.
Ask a local fire agency or qualified fire professional to account for slope, wind exposure, vegetation, and applicable requirements. Local officials can also advise on permitted vegetation removal, defensible-space distances, inspections, and any insurance-related requirements; none can be assumed without knowing the property’s jurisdiction.

Keep evacuation readiness separate from property work
Vegetation management can reduce some exposure, but it does not remove wildfire danger. Make a household evacuation plan, know the routes available to you, and leave promptly when officials direct evacuation. Do not use work done around the home as a reason to stay during an evacuation.

The cited FEMA and Ready.gov material is home-preparedness guidance, not a study of forest moisture. It does not establish how much mountain forests have dried, what caused any drying, or how wildfire risk has changed in a particular region. Those questions require location-specific, current evidence; the home-safety steps above are useful without assuming a particular forest trend.
