There is no single Android RAM or chipset minimum for running diffusion models. The hardware you need depends on the model architecture and format, image settings, inference app, and whether its software can use your phone’s CPU, GPU, or neural processing unit (NPU). Official demonstrations show Stable Diffusion 1.5 running on selected Snapdragon phones with an optimized runtime, but they do not guarantee that another app or phone will work the same way.
What determines whether a phone can run a diffusion model?
Local image generation is a software-and-hardware combination, not simply a matter of buying a phone with a particular processor. The app must support the model architecture and file format, and its inference runtime must be able to execute the model on the device. Android inference frameworks such as Google LiteRT for Android provide CPU, GPU, and NPU execution options, but whether an app can use a given path depends on its implementation, model conversion, and available delegates.
Workload settings matter too. Model precision or quantization, output resolution, and the number of generation steps affect the work the device must perform. A model file’s size is not the same as the phone’s total memory requirement: Android, the app, and inference buffers also need memory. Storage is a separate consideration for model files and generated images; the available evidence does not establish a universal storage minimum.
- Model: Check the exact architecture and model format the app supports. A project supporting Stable Diffusion 1.5 does not automatically support other diffusion architectures.
- Runtime and accelerator: Confirm whether the app uses CPU, GPU, or NPU on the specific device. Hardware acceleration is useful only when the app’s runtime supports it.
- Memory: Look for an app- or model-specific requirement and allow headroom for Android and the running app. Do not infer total RAM needs from model-file size alone.
- Generation settings: Compare resolution, precision, and steps when judging whether a published performance figure applies to your intended use.
- Sustained operation: Repeated generation can behave differently from a single run. Xiaomi notes that system load and thermal state affect performance.
What do Android diffusion demonstrations establish?
Xiaomi’s Snapdragon QNN project
Xiaomi’s StableDiffusionOnDevice project is based on Stable Diffusion v1.5 and says it does not support other SD architectures. It lists Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 8 Gen 3 as target platforms. Xiaomi Mobile Phone Team reported tests on Xiaomi 13-series and Xiaomi 14-series phones in October 2023.

These figures illustrate why a chip name alone is not a performance specification. The NPU results use INT8 at 512 resolution, while the CPU results use FP16 at 256 resolution; they are not a controlled CPU-versus-NPU comparison. The reported memory requests are configuration-specific, not minimum RAM specifications for Android phones. Xiaomi also cautions that hardware, system load, and thermal status affect performance.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 demonstration
Qualcomm described running Stable Diffusion 1.5 on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Android phone after optimizing the model and execution stack. The company says it began with the FP32 model and used quantization, compilation, and hardware acceleration. Its 2023 article describes Stable Diffusion as having more than one billion parameters. This demonstrates that on-device inference is feasible with a tuned stack; it does not establish a minimum specification or compatibility with every third-party app. See Qualcomm’s demonstration and its Stable Diffusion v1.5 mobile model card.

Research results are configuration-specific
Mobile diffusion research identifies model size, memory use, and inference speed as key deployment challenges; for example, see the MobileDiffusion paper. A separate GPU-aware optimization paper reports under 12 seconds for Stable Diffusion 1.4 at 512×512 with 20 iterations on a Samsung S23 Ultra in its tested GPU setup. That research result should not be compared directly with Xiaomi’s NPU figures: the model, device, execution path, and test configuration differ.
How should you compare Android phones?
Use the exact app and model you intend to run as the starting point. The LiteRT overview describes on-device inference and development options, while Android’s NNAPI documentation explains processor distribution and includes a forward-looking recommendation for performance-sensitive development. Neither framework documentation is a universal compatibility list for consumer diffusion apps.

- Check app compatibility: Read the app’s current documentation for supported Android versions, chipsets, model architectures, and model formats. If a device or model is not listed, do not assume support based on the processor brand.
- Identify the execution path: Find out whether the app runs inference on CPU, GPU, or NPU for that phone, and whether it requires a particular runtime or delegate.
- Check memory and storage separately: Use the app’s stated requirements if available. Keep enough free storage for model files and outputs, and do not treat a model’s file size or a project’s memory request as the phone’s total RAM requirement.
- Match the workload: Compare results only when model, precision, image resolution, and steps are alike. Higher-resolution generation or a different model build can change resource use and elapsed time.
- Consider sustained use: Look for evidence from repeated generation on the same device, since temperature and system load can change performance.
Is a flagship Snapdragon phone required?
No universal rule says diffusion inference requires a flagship Snapdragon phone, and the available examples do not establish a minimum chipset for Android as a whole. They show specific optimized projects on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and 8 Gen 3 platforms. CPU execution is also possible in the Xiaomi project, but its reported CPU results use different precision and resolution from its NPU results and cannot be generalized to other devices.
For developers, the same principle applies in reverse: select the target model, runtime, and accelerator path together, then validate on the exact Android devices and settings you intend to support. Framework availability alone does not prove that a particular model will run efficiently on a particular phone.
