When your Google Account runs out of storage, Google services that use its shared quota can stop or become limited: Drive uploads and file creation, new Google Photos backups, and normal Gmail sending or receiving may be affected. You can still sign in. Reaching the limit does not immediately delete your data, but Google says content may be removed if the account remains over quota for two years or longer, after advance notice.
How Google Account storage works
For a typical personal Google Account, Google provides up to 15 GB of storage shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. Messages and attachments, Drive files, and qualifying Photos uploads can all use that pool; WhatsApp backups and other qualifying content may count too. The amount is not identical for every account: promotions, purchases, or a storage plan can change it. Google’s storage overview explains what counts.
Some historical content follows different rules. For example, certain Google Photos uploads in Storage saver (formerly High quality) made before June 1, 2021 did not count toward storage. Some older collaborative files also receive different treatment. As a result, deleting older photos or files may not reduce the current usage as much as expected.

What stops working when storage is full?
- Google Drive: You may be unable to upload files or create new files. Some collaborative files may also be difficult or impossible to create or edit.
- Google Photos: New photos and videos may no longer back up to your account.
- Gmail: Sending or receiving email may be disrupted; Google says mail can stop when the account reaches its storage limit.
The exact effects can vary by service. A full storage quota is not the same as losing access to your Google Account: Google says, “You can still sign into and access your Google Account.” Google’s quota guidance describes the service effects.
Will Google delete your files right away?
No. Reaching the limit does not itself mean immediate deletion. Google says content may be removed if an account stays over its storage limit for two years or longer. Google states that it will give at least three months’ notice before content becomes eligible for deletion, with an opportunity to free space, buy storage, or download data. The two-year point is a policy threshold, not a guarantee that deletion will occur on a specific date. See Google’s over-quota policy for the current terms.

How to get storage back
- Find what is using space. Open Google’s storage manager and review usage by service.
- Remove content you no longer need. Look for large Drive files, Gmail messages with large attachments, and Photos content you can do without. If you plan to keep a copy, download it first and verify that the downloaded files open correctly before deleting the cloud copies.
- Review and empty the trash folders. Gmail Spam and Trash and the trash in Drive and Photos can continue to count against storage until permanently cleared. Emptying them permanently deletes their contents; do so only after checking that you do not need anything in them. Google Drive’s storage guidance covers the deletion and update process.
- Allow the usage display to catch up. Google says deleting multiple files can take 48–72 hours to show in the storage figure. Check the storage manager again after that period rather than assuming the display will update immediately.
- Consider additional storage if cleanup is not suitable. Google One offers paid storage plans where available; check the account’s plan details for current availability and terms. Google says plans start at 100 GB, but pricing and availability can vary.
If this is a work or school account, storage rules may be set by the organization. Contact the account administrator about limits or plan changes rather than assuming personal Google One options apply.
If you bought more storage but still see a full account
First check that the added storage is associated with the Google Account that is over quota and review its storage manager. If the plan appears purchased but has not changed the account’s available storage, use Google’s help for storage purchases that are not showing up. Do not assume that a displayed usage figure updates instantly; bulk deletion may take 48–72 hours to appear.
