Uninstalling Microsoft OneDrive removes its Windows sync app where Windows allows removal; it does not, by itself, delete files stored in your OneDrive cloud account. Files already downloaded to the PC remain as local files, while online-only files are available through OneDrive on the web rather than as complete local copies. The important distinction is that uninstalling the app, unlinking the PC, stopping folder backup, deleting synced files, and permanently erasing cloud files are separate actions.
What uninstalling OneDrive changes—and what it does not
Microsoft Support says, “You won’t lose files or data by uninstalling OneDrive from your computer.” The app removal stops OneDrive syncing on that Windows installation; uninstalling alone is not a command to erase the cloud account or its files. Microsoft’s documented removal path is Start > Add or remove programs > Microsoft OneDrive > Uninstall.
What happens to files on the computer depends on their availability state. A fully downloaded file marked “Available on this device” remains in the OneDrive folder after unlinking. An “Available when online” item is a placeholder, not a full local copy; it can still be reached by signing in to OneDrive on the web. Microsoft describes these states and Files On-Demand in its OneDrive account-removal guidance and sync and Files On-Demand overview.
Choose the action that matches your goal
| Action | What it changes | File impact |
|---|---|---|
| Unlink this PC | Disconnects the computer from the OneDrive account. | Cloud files stay online; local availability depends on whether files were downloaded. Microsoft instructions and file availability details. |
| Uninstall OneDrive | Removes the Windows app where supported. | Microsoft says uninstalling itself does not delete OneDrive data. Microsoft instructions. |
| Stop folder backup | Stops OneDrive backing up selected known folders such as Desktop. | Previously backed-up files may remain in OneDrive and may need to be moved back manually. Microsoft folder-backup guidance. |
| Delete within a synced OneDrive folder | Removes a synced item. | Deletion can sync to OneDrive and the computer. Microsoft deletion guidance. |
| Delete cloud files and empty the recycle bin | Removes cloud content and its recycle-bin recovery path. | This is a separate, destructive workflow; files removed from the OneDrive recycle bin cannot be recovered from it. Microsoft permanent-deletion instructions. |
Check files before removing the app
Identify files that are only online
In File Explorer, inspect the OneDrive files’ availability indicators. If a file must remain usable on the computer without an internet connection or OneDrive sign-in, ensure it is downloaded before disconnecting. Another option is to move or copy the file to a folder outside OneDrive. Files On-Demand is designed to let you see cloud files without downloading all of them, so a visible item is not necessarily a local copy.

Protect Desktop and other backed-up folders
If OneDrive folder backup was enabled for Desktop, Documents, or another known folder, check where those files are stored before stopping backup or uninstalling. Microsoft says stopping backup does not necessarily put existing files back in their original device folders: files already backed up remain in the OneDrive folder and may need to be moved manually. New files saved in that folder after backup stops are no longer backed up by OneDrive. See Microsoft’s folder-backup instructions.
Unlink OneDrive without uninstalling it
If the goal is simply to stop this PC syncing with the account, unlinking is less drastic than removing the app. Microsoft’s route is OneDrive notification-area icon > Settings > Account > Unlink this PC. Unlinking does not delete cloud files, and you can sign in again later if you want to reconnect. Local files marked as available on the device remain; online-only files are not converted into downloaded copies by unlinking.

Uninstall OneDrive in Windows 11
- Open Start and search for Add or remove programs.
- Open the matching Windows Settings page and locate Microsoft OneDrive in the app list.
- Select the app, choose Uninstall, and confirm. Windows may request administrator approval.
Microsoft also documents the Start menu route: Start > Add or remove programs > Microsoft OneDrive > Uninstall. Some Windows versions have OneDrive built in and do not allow it to be uninstalled. Microsoft’s alternative for those versions is to unlink the PC, turn off OneDrive settings, quit the app, and hide its File Explorer entry. The documentation does not establish that every Windows 11 edition or organization-managed PC behaves identically.
Avoid accidental cloud deletion
Do not treat deleting the OneDrive folder as a safe cleanup step until you know which entries are local files and which are online-only placeholders. Deleting a file while it is in a synced OneDrive folder can delete it from both the computer and OneDrive. To keep a local copy while removing the cloud copy, move the file outside the OneDrive folder first; Microsoft explains this distinction in its file and folder deletion guidance.

If you intend to erase cloud content permanently, that is not part of uninstalling. Microsoft’s separate procedure is to unlink the computer, delete the cloud files, then empty the OneDrive recycle bin only if you are certain. Microsoft warns that files deleted from that recycle bin cannot be recovered from it. Follow its permanent OneDrive deletion instructions only when permanent cloud removal is the goal.
