Redeeming a tokenized real-world asset (RWA) usually means submitting a request under the issuer’s rules, having the token and claim checked and valued, and then receiving cash or an agreed asset. A blockchain transfer or token burn may be one step, not the moment your bank receives money or a physical asset reaches you. There is no universal redemption timeline: published examples range from a reported asset-transfer leg completed in under five seconds to several business days or a T+4 banking-day schedule, but they measure different products and milestones.
What “redeem” means for a tokenized asset
A token is not automatically a digital deed to the thing it references. The U.S. Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee describes tokenization as representing claims digitally on a programmable platform. It distinguishes the information and ownership layer from the services and rules governing transfers and settlement. In practice, the legal terms determine what claim the holder has and whether that claim can be redeemed for cash, the referenced asset, or something else.
Redemption is the process the issuer or an appointed agent recognizes under those terms. Depending on the product, you may have to surrender, transfer, lock, or burn tokens. The issuer may then pay cash, deliver an asset, or settle a contractual claim. Completing an on-chain step does not by itself establish that off-chain payment or delivery is complete.
What happens during a redemption
The exact sequence depends on the product. These are the usual decision points to check in the issuer’s current instructions, rather than a guaranteed sequence for every token.

- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Check eligibility and terms. Confirm that your holder type, location, wallet, token amount, and chosen settlement method qualify. Look for minimums, identity checks, request cutoffs, and any limits on retail access. For example, a fund may restrict redemption to authorized participants, while physical gold delivery may require a verified customer and a minimum amount.
- Submit the request in the required way. Instructions may use an issuer app, a form, an appointed agent, or a transfer to a designated address. The Federal Reserve’s 2023 MatrixDock STBT case study describes an app request or transfer to the issuer’s designated address. Sending tokens elsewhere is not equivalent to a valid redemption request.
- Allow the issuer or agent to validate and value it. They may check the request, eligibility, and token amount, then apply the product’s price or valuation formula and fees. A redemption price need not equal a familiar headline value such as one dollar per token. In the same Federal Reserve case study, MatrixDock’s early-redemption example used an execution price that could be below one dollar per token and a 0.1% redemption fee.
- Complete the token accounting step. The terms determine whether tokens are surrendered, burned, locked, or otherwise removed from your balance, and when that happens. Do not assume the token’s disappearance from a wallet means payment has arrived.
- Wait for settlement through the relevant route. Cash may still need to move through payment or bank infrastructure. Physical delivery can involve custodian handling, shipping, and further eligibility checks. These steps can finish on different schedules.
How long redemption can take
Published timelines are useful as product-specific examples, not as a general estimate for all RWAs. They measure different events, apply to different holders, and use different calendars.
| Example and source | Reported timing | What the timing applies to |
|---|---|---|
| MatrixDock STBT; Federal Reserve Board case study, 2023 | T+4 New York Banking Days | A product-specific redemption timeline. The case study also describes a product-specific execution-price calculation and 0.1% redemption fee; it is not a general rule for Treasury tokens. |
| Tether Gold physical redemption; issuer terms accessed in 2026 | Several business days may be needed | Tether says it makes commercially reasonable efforts to process verified physical-redemption requests promptly. Its terms allow delays in specified circumstances, including reserve illiquidity or unavailability and legal requirements. |
| Tokenized gold fund; SEC-filed document, 2025 | Distribution to an authorized participant on the second business day after the redemption order date, if the stated DTC credit condition is met | A process limited to authorized participants redeeming 50,000-share creation units. The filing says tokenized shares may first need conversion to traditional shares for the relevant process, and reserves specified rights to reject, suspend, or postpone redemptions. This is not a retail-holder benchmark. |
| Ondo institutional cross-border pilot; issuer report, 2026 | Under five seconds for the XRPL asset leg | Ondo reported this timing for the asset leg of one pilot transaction. Its account describes a separate fiat payout instruction and bank-infrastructure settlement to Singapore; the asset-leg figure is not an end-to-end retail bank-credit promise. |
| Covered payment tokens under a Central Bank of the UAE rule effective in 2024 | By the same time on the next business day after a request, unless the Central Bank permits otherwise | The rulebook search-result extract describes a requirement for the specified payment-token category: issuers must redeem, or for a foreign payment token initiate redemption, without delay and by that deadline. It does not set a timeline for every RWA token. |
These examples cannot be averaged into a meaningful “typical” duration: they concern different assets, holders, jurisdictions, and settlement milestones. No general published mean or universal redemption-time statistic is established by these examples.

What you receive depends on the legal claim
Before redeeming, identify whether the product promises cash, the referenced asset, or a different contractual benefit. Examples show why a token’s name or reference asset is not enough to answer that question.
- Cash or referenced-asset value. Under Article 39 of the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), holders of covered asset-referenced tokens have a right of redemption against the issuer. On request, the issuer redeems by paying an amount in funds corresponding to the market value of the referenced assets or by delivering the referenced assets. The issuer’s policy must set out conditions, thresholds, timeframes, valuation principles, and settlement conditions. Article 39 says redemption is not subject to a fee, without prejudice to Article 46. This is a rule for the covered EU regulatory category, not a universal rule for every token.
- Physical gold, if the terms and minimums allow it. Paxos describes PAXG as representing one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold held in London vaults and says it is redeemable one-to-one for physical gold. That does not mean every fractional holding can be delivered as a bar. Tether Gold’s terms provide for verified customers to request physical gold subject to conditions such as minimum size and fees. They describe London Good Delivery bars and explain that a bar generally is not exactly 400 fine troy ounces; the terms give 430 tokens as a possible requested deposit, with the redeemed amount adjusted for the bar’s actual size and purity. These are issuer-specific terms, not a shared gold-token standard.
- A claim to returns rather than the property itself. The Federal Reserve’s 2023 Lofty example describes property transferred into an LLC, tokenized membership shares, and returns from rent and appreciation. It says redemption of the underlying property is unlikely because the token represents a legal claim to returns, not the property itself.
- The referenced asset only after all fractions are held. In the Federal Reserve’s 2023 Tangible TNFT example, the reference asset is redeemable only when one holder owns all fractions. That is a feature of that design, not a general rule for NFTs.
- Fund units through an institutional route. The 2025 SEC-filed fund example limits creation-unit redemption to authorized participants and sets the unit at 50,000 shares. The fund’s process and any conversion from tokenized to traditional shares matter; holding a tokenized share does not by itself make a retail investor an eligible redeemer.

- What you will receive: cash, a cash equivalent, the referenced asset, or a contractual claim to returns.
- Who can redeem: any holder, identity-verified customers, qualified investors, or authorized participants only.
- Minimum amount: a token threshold, whole-unit or whole-fraction requirement, or minimum for physical delivery.
- How value is calculated: market value, net asset value (NAV), an execution or settlement price, or another stated formula.
- What it costs: issuer redemption fees, network charges, custody or delivery costs, and bank fees may be separate. Check which charges apply to your route.
- Which clock and cutoff apply: confirm whether the terms use calendar days, business days, or banking days; which jurisdiction’s holidays count; and whether a request after the cutoff starts processing later.
- When each milestone occurs: distinguish request acceptance, token processing, issuer payment, bank credit, and physical delivery. A stated time for one is not automatically the timeline for the others.
- What can interrupt processing: check for compliance review, reserve availability, market disruption, and terms allowing a request to be rejected, suspended, or delayed.
For legal or financial decisions, use the current governing terms and applicable rules. The examples here describe particular products, filings, or regulatory categories; they do not establish a guaranteed settlement date for an individual request.
