The event is detected by measuring those waves—not by watching the black holes collide through a telescope. The familiar close-up animations are simulations, not footage.
How a black-hole merger unfolds
A binary black-hole coalescence has three stages: inspiral, merger, and ringdown. The stages are distinct in the gravitational-wave signal researchers measure.
1. Inspiral: the orbit shrinks
The black holes orbit one another while gravitational waves carry energy away. As the system loses energy, the orbit tightens and the holes spiral closer together.
2. Merger: one black hole forms
The two black holes join to form a single, larger black hole. This is not like two solid objects striking each other: black holes are defined by their event horizons, and the merger is a dynamic change in spacetime. A simulation may depict the horizons touching as a visual cue, but that is not an ordinary material impact.

3. Ringdown: the remnant settles
The newly formed black hole is distorted. It emits gravitational waves as it settles into a stable state. Those waves have characteristic frequencies and decay times related to the remnant’s mass and spin.
What was measured in the first observed merger?
On September 14, 2015, LIGO detected GW150914, the first direct detection of gravitational waves and the first observation of a binary black-hole merger. The source was more than one billion light-years away. LIGO’s GW150914 summary describes the signal and its comparison with a modeled waveform.

For GW150914, LIGO estimated that the two original black holes had masses of about 29 and 36 times the Sun’s mass, and that the remnant had about 62 solar masses. The estimates imply that about three solar masses’ worth of mass-energy was emitted as gravitational waves, mostly in a fraction of a second. That energy is equivalent to the mass difference; it does not mean three solar masses of matter simply vanished. These numbers describe GW150914 specifically, not every black-hole merger. LIGO’s FAQ gives the event estimates.
At its peak in the final moments, GW150914’s gravitational-wave power was more than ten times the combined light power of all stars and galaxies in the observable universe, according to LIGO’s event summary. This compares peak power, not the total energy produced over cosmic history.

Can you see black holes collide?
Not in the way an animation might suggest. LIGO and other gravitational-wave detectors measure changes in gravitational-wave strain; they do not record a visible image of the collision. The available evidence for events such as GW150914 is a signal pattern that researchers compare with predictions from general relativity and numerical models.
The widely shared GW150914 animation is a simulation made by solving equations from general relativity using LIGO data. It renders how the black holes bend background starlight, including distorted images and an Einstein ring. LIGO Lab notes that the gravitational waves themselves would not be visible to a human near the black holes. The animation depicts a particular model: two holes each roughly 30 times the Sun’s mass, with time slowed by about a factor of 100 for presentation. Those are visualization details, not general properties of all mergers. LIGO Lab’s simulation description explains the rendering.

What gravitational waves reveal
The waveform carries information about the orbiting black holes and the remnant. Its changing pattern lets researchers infer properties such as the component masses and, from the later signal, the remnant’s mass and spin. Comparing what the inspiral implies with what the merger and ringdown imply provides a test of general relativity.
LIGO summaries report that these consistency tests have been compatible with general relativity for the events analyzed. A 2026 LIGO summary says the GW250114 signal enabled a direct verification of the black-hole area theorem. That is a result for the analyzed event; it does not establish that every aspect of general relativity has been proved in every regime. Why different mergers tell us different things
GW190412: unequal masses
In GW190412, the heavier black hole was more than three times the mass of its companion. That imbalance affected the waveform and helped researchers measure properties such as distance, inclination, spin, and precession more precisely; it also made analysis of higher gravitational-wave harmonics possible. GW190521: a high-mass event
A LIGO summary described GW190521 as the most massive collision observed at the time of that report and discussed whether black holes of such high mass could form through earlier mergers. The record claim is time-dependent, so it should not be read as a statement about the current record. LIGO’s GW190521 summary gives the context.
