It depends on why the submarine is arriving. A new boat may be coming to its home base for the first time and continuing sea trials; one returning from deployment may reunite with family and move into maintenance or further training; a boat assigned to a major refit may begin a much longer engineering programme. These are different events, not one standard arrival routine.
What happens when a Royal Navy submarine arrives?
Public accounts show a visible moment alongside—sometimes with naval personnel or family and friends waiting—followed by work shaped by the boat’s status. The Royal Navy’s 2 October 2026 report on HMS Agamemnon describes a first home-port arrival after construction, while a 2014 Ministry of Defence account describes HMS Talent returning from a five-month deployment. Neither account establishes a universal ceremony or timetable.
HMS Agamemnon’s first arrival at Clyde
HMS Agamemnon, the sixth Astute-class hunter-killer submarine, arrived at HM Naval Base Clyde on 2 October 2026 after sailing from BAE Systems in Barrow on 25 September. Members of the Submarine Flotilla lined up to welcome the boat, alongside senior officers including Director Submarines Rear Admiral Andy Perks and Commander of the Submarine Flotilla Commodore Ben Haskins. The Royal Navy reported a crew of around 100 submariners. Royal Navy arrival report

This was not a return from an operational patrol. The boat was moving from construction and initial trials toward service. She had been testing performance, manoeuvrability, speed and seaworthiness, and sea trials were to continue over the coming weeks and months. The Royal Navy said she would join the operational fleet after trials and operational preparation.

The arrival was one milestone in a boat-specific timeline: Agamemnon’s keel was laid in July 2013, she was commissioned by King Charles III on 22 September 2025, and her first dive at sea took place on the journey to Clyde. Those dates do not describe a standard schedule for other submarines.
What “home port” means
HM Naval Base Clyde (HMNB Clyde), commonly called Faslane, is the base port for the Faslane Flotilla and home to the core of the Royal Navy Submarine Service, including the nuclear deterrent and hunter-killer submarines. Royal Navy: HMNB Clyde

Home port does not automatically mean the submarine is beginning a major refit. The Submarine Delivery Agency says routine submarine maintenance and dockings take place at Clyde. HMNB Devonport is where in-service submarines are maintained, modernised and refitted. The work at either location depends on the boat’s programme. Submarine Delivery Agency: about

A submarine coming home after a patrol is returning with an established crew and operational experience, rather than arriving as a new boat still progressing through trials. In a Ministry of Defence account published on 28 January 2014, HMS Talent returned to Devonport after a five-month deployment. Around 100 family members and friends welcomed the crew. Some sailors received their “dolphins,” the badges signifying full submariner qualification. The boat was scheduled for a six-week maintenance period followed by further sea training. These details describe that return, not a fleet-wide rule. Ministry of Defence: HMS Talent returns home

What may follow once the boat is alongside
The next phase depends on whether the submarine is in trials, has returned from deployment, or is due for substantial maintenance.
- Trials and preparation: A new boat such as Agamemnon continues sea trials and operational preparation before joining the operational fleet.
- Post-deployment work: A returning boat may undergo maintenance and later sea training, as HMS Talent was scheduled to do after its 2014 return.
- Major maintenance or refit: An assigned overhaul can involve extensive engineering, upgrades and safety-system revalidation. In a 2025 account, the Royal Navy described HMS Victorious’s Deep Maintenance Period at Devonport as having an afloat phase and a later dry-dock phase, with work coordinated by the Royal Navy, Babcock and the Ministry of Defence. It was a major regeneration project, not the routine consequence of every home-port arrival. Royal Navy: HMS Victorious deep maintenance
What the public can—and cannot—assume
Official reports establish selected welcome details and follow-on plans, not the full harbour-entry process, security arrangements or maintenance checklist. The King’s Harbour Master Clyde is responsible for safe and orderly passage through the waters of the Dockyard Port of Clyde, but public sources do not set out a complete arrival procedure. Family and friends were present at HMS Talent’s reported return, but that example does not mean every arrival is announced publicly or that spectators can access a naval base. The available accounts also do not establish a standard crew-leave policy or a fixed interval between arrival and the next deployment.
