A failed license-delivery webhook means the receiving endpoint did not acknowledge an event in the way the sender expects. It does not prove that the license event never happened—or that the license was lost. Whether the sender retries, and how you restore the right entitlement state, depends on the license provider. Check its delivery record first, fix the endpoint, then redeliver or reconcile the source data.
What a failed license webhook tells you—and what it does not
A webhook is an HTTP request that sends an event to a configured endpoint. The sender records failure when it cannot connect, the request times out, or the endpoint returns a response that does not count as successful under that sender’s rules. Those rules differ: GitHub, for example, records a failure if the server is unavailable or takes longer than 10 seconds to respond; Shopify treats responses outside the 200 range as unsuccessful and documents a five-second response threshold. These are provider-specific limits, not universal webhook standards. GitHub’s webhook best practices and Shopify’s troubleshooting guidance describe their respective requirements.

The failure establishes that the receiver did not complete delivery acknowledgement as expected. It does not establish whether the source system issued, delayed, or canceled a license. Confirm the event and entitlement in the license provider’s own records before deciding what state should be restored.

Will the webhook retry?
Retry behavior belongs to the sender; there is no single retry count or schedule for all license webhooks. The official examples below illustrate how much policies can vary.
#1 Best Overall
| Sender | Automatic retries | Manual recovery |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub | Failed deliveries are not automatically redelivered. | Operators can redeliver failed deliveries manually or use a scheduled script to check recent attempts and redeliver failures. GitHub’s failed-delivery documentation |
| Shopify | Retries failed calls up to eight times over four hours. After eight consecutive failures, a subscription may be removed depending on its configuration; delivery stops when retries are exhausted. | Restore or recreate a removed subscription where applicable, then redeliver or reconcile missed data. Shopify’s troubleshooting guidance and delivery verification documentation |
| Stripe | Unsuccessful events are retried several times. The cited support guidance does not specify an exact count or schedule. | Inspect the failed event’s webhook attempts, HTTP status, and response. Stripe’s webhook troubleshooting guidance |
These are examples, not evidence of an unnamed license provider’s policy. Check that provider’s current documentation for accepted status codes, timeout, retry window, maximum attempts, event retention, manual replay options, and whether repeated failures disable or remove the subscription.
How to diagnose a failed delivery
Start with the sender’s delivery log or delivery API. Establish whether the expected event was attempted, then use its timestamp and response details to narrow down the cause. GitHub distinguishes missing delivery records from connection and response-timeout failures; Stripe directs operators to open the failed event and inspect its attempts.
- Confirm the source event and destination. Check that the license event exists and that the correct endpoint or subscription is configured.
- Open the delivery record. Note the attempt time, HTTP status, response details, and any connection or TLS error.
- Classify the failure. Look for DNS or connectivity problems, TLS errors, a timeout, a non-success HTTP status, or an application-level rejection.
- Compare with receiver logs. Check the application logs around the attempt time and verify what response the endpoint actually returned.
- Fix the cause before replaying. Otherwise, a new attempt is likely to fail for the same reason.
How to prevent slow responses and duplicate license changes
Acknowledge promptly; process reliably
Respond within the sender’s deadline. GitHub recommends returning a 2XX response within 10 seconds and suggests moving slower work to a queue so the endpoint can acknowledge the request before background processing finishes. That 10-second figure is GitHub’s guidance, not a universal threshold. Shopify documents a five-second response threshold for its own webhook deliveries. GitHub’s best practices
An acknowledgement should not mean discarding the event. Persist enough information to process it reliably after responding—for example, by writing it to a durable queue or event store. Then complete the license-related work asynchronously and record its result.

- The Shelly Pro 3EM 3CT 63 is a next-gen DIN rail-mountable energy meter for single or three-phase installations, featuring a 63A, 3-phase current transformer for non-contact measurements. It supports 4-quadrant measurement, optical pulse indication of energy usage, and is photovoltaic-ready. *It doesn't have a built-in relay; contactor control requires a Shelly Pro Addon attached to the device.
- Professional Smart Meter - Shelly Pro 3EM-3CT63 is a professional smart meter that reports accumulated energy, voltage, current, active, and apparent power per phase in real time. It stores data for up to 60 days in 1-minute intervals and includes a real-time clock to maintain accurate time if the SNTP server connection is lost.
- Ideal for business energy measurement - In commercial buildings, it helps monitor energy usage across floors or departments allowing accurate cost allocation and identification of energy wastage. In manufacturing plants it tracks energy consumption of heavy machinery, optimizing usage to reduce operational costs. For store owners it monitors energy usage of systems like lighting, HVAC § refrigeration, helping to identify inefficiencies § reduce energy bills while supporting sustainable practices

Verify the sender and make processing idempotent
Validate authenticity with the provider’s prescribed signature mechanism; Shopify documents HMAC SHA-256 verification. Also assume an event can arrive more than once, including around timeouts and retries. Store the provider’s event or delivery identifier and make handling idempotent, so redelivery cannot issue a license twice or overwrite a newer entitlement state. GitHub notes that its X-GitHub-Delivery identifier remains unchanged when a delivery is redelivered; Shopify distinguishes webhook IDs from event IDs in duplicate scenarios. Shopify’s delivery verification documentation and GitHub’s best practices
How to recover missed license events after downtime
Recovery has two parts: restore delivery, then establish whether the receiver’s license state matches the source. A retry is the sender’s attempt to deliver an event again; it does not necessarily recover events that have expired, become unavailable, or stopped arriving after a subscription was removed.
- Restore endpoint health and configuration. Correct the connection, response, or application problem and verify the endpoint and subscription are active.
- Use the provider’s supported redelivery path. GitHub supports manual redelivery and REST API workflows. Redeliver only after the receiving service can handle the event safely.
- Check for exhausted retries or a removed subscription. If the sender has stopped delivery, restore or recreate the subscription as its documentation directs.
- Reconcile against the source of truth. Compare the receiver’s license or entitlement records with the provider’s records. If events can no longer be replayed, retrieve missing data through the provider’s API or export and apply changes idempotently.
Shopify recommends recreating removed subscriptions where applicable and importing missing data after an extended outage. The exact source-of-truth API, event retention, and replay window depend on the license provider; the examples above do not establish those details for another service.
