If a drone is “jammed,” what happens next depends on which signal or system is affected. A lost controller link may trigger the aircraft’s configured failsafe—such as return to home (RTH), hover, or land. Lost or unreliable GNSS positioning is different: it can make an automated return unreliable or unavailable. RTH is a conditional backup, not a guarantee that a drone can navigate home through interference.
What “jammed” can mean for a drone
People often use “jammed” to describe any sudden loss of connection or positioning. For a pilot, the important distinction is whether the aircraft has lost its link to the controller, its GNSS positioning, or both. The compass can also be affected. Symptoms and fallback behavior vary by aircraft.

A warning by itself does not establish that someone intentionally jammed the drone. It indicates a problem the aircraft or app has detected; use the live warnings and your model’s manual to identify which system is affected.

Will a drone return home if GPS is jammed?
Not necessarily. RTH is a feature with model-specific requirements and logic. DJI’s RTH guidance identifies a recorded Home Point, adequate GPS/GNSS, and a normally functioning compass among the conditions relevant to Failsafe RTH. If positioning is compromised, a return route may be unreliable even if a control-link failure has triggered the failsafe.

Some DJI aircraft may enter ATTI mode if GPS becomes weak or is lost and the vision systems cannot provide positioning. DJI advises landing as soon as possible in a safe location in that situation. Follow the warning and the exact instructions for your aircraft rather than assuming an automated return can compensate for missing positioning.
Even when only the controller link is lost, RTH behavior is not identical across drones. The aircraft’s configured signal-loss action, model, app, firmware, trigger conditions, and available positioning all affect what happens. DJI’s support material gives different examples of trigger timing and route behavior across aircraft; a delay or procedure for one model should not be applied to another.

What to do if your drone loses signal or GPS
- Keep the aircraft in sight where required and legal. Check the live app warnings and your aircraft manual to determine whether the issue is the controller link, GNSS, compass, or more than one system. Do not infer intentional jamming from a warning alone.
- If you still have control but GNSS is weak or unavailable, prioritize a safe landing. DJI’s general guidance for affected aircraft is to land as soon as possible in a safe place. Avoid relying on an automated route when its positioning prerequisites are missing.
- If the controller link is interrupted, understand what the configured failsafe is set to do. If RTH conditions are satisfied, the signal-loss behavior may activate. Account for the configured RTH altitude and nearby terrain or obstacles; do not assume every aircraft will use the same route or timing.
- If the problem is a weak controller link, address the link only when it is safe to do so. DJI’s consumer guidance recommends adjusting controller antenna orientation and moving away from an interference-affected area when feasible. That advice concerns the controller link; it is not a remedy for GNSS jamming.
- After landing, keep useful incident details. Preserve flight logs and note the location, time, app warnings, and aircraft model if you need to contact the manufacturer. These are practical records, not a universal manufacturer-mandated recovery checklist.
Check these settings before takeoff
- Confirm the app indicates that the Home Point has been recorded.
- Check the aircraft’s signal-loss action—RTH, hover, or land—and understand how that model implements it.
- Choose an RTH altitude that accounts for the terrain and obstacles on the expected route.
- Read the manual for the exact aircraft, and account for model, app, and firmware differences.
- Remember that strong wind or unavailable positioning can undermine a return even when RTH is configured.
These checks can prevent avoidable surprises; they cannot prevent interference or guarantee recovery. DJI’s Flight Safety Guidelines and RTH materials direct pilots to model-specific instructions, while the FAA’s GNSS Interference Resource Guide covers jamming and spoofing as interference topics. The FAA guide does not establish how likely a particular consumer drone is to be affected.

RTH is an aircraft feature, not a universal behavior shared by all drones. Some configurations may initiate it after a lost controller link; other signal-loss settings may call for hovering or landing. Critical-battery behavior can also differ from signal-loss behavior. DJI’s consumer RTH guidance describes these as product-specific behaviors, not a single timing or procedure for every aircraft.

Before depending on RTH, check the corresponding aircraft manual and confirm the Home Point, positioning, compass, signal-loss action, and altitude settings. If those conditions are not met—or GNSS becomes weak during the return—the aircraft may not be able to navigate home as expected.
