Your digital Xbox games stay tied to the Microsoft/Xbox account that bought them, and supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S saves can sync to another console through the cloud. Disc games usually still require the disc and a console with a disc drive. Compatibility, save transfer and sharing depend on the specific game, console generation and account setup.
What happens to your digital Xbox games?
Sign in on the new compatible Xbox with the account that purchased the games, then download them from your library. Xbox Wire says a signed-in console displays the digital library ready for download: Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S Will Be the Best Place to Play 1000s of Games From Across Four Generations of Xbox.
Having a game in your library does not guarantee that it runs on every Xbox. The title must be compatible with the new console, and access may depend on whether you own it or have an active subscription entitlement. Check the exact title in Xbox’s backward-compatibility catalog before switching specifically to play an older game.

Will your saves and progress transfer?
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S saves for supported games can sync through the cloud to another console. Before leaving the old Xbox behind, connect it to the internet and give the game time to sync its current save. Then sign in on the new console with the same account and launch the game while connected.

Save files are separate from installed game files: copying a game installation does not itself move progress. Cloud behavior varies by game and platform; do not assume that progress carries between distinct editions, generations, PC or other devices. Microsoft’s developer policy explains the title and platform conditions for save roaming: Live cloud storage overview.
Original Xbox and Xbox 360 saves
Do not expect saves created on an original Xbox or Xbox 360 to transfer as saves to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Xbox’s backward-compatibility guidance says that saves created on Xbox One or Series X|S can then transfer between those newer consoles through the cloud, but older-generation saves do not transfer to them: Xbox Backward Compatible Games.

What happens to disc-based games?
In the ordinary case, keep the game disc: it acts as the license, and the new console needs a compatible disc drive. Xbox Series X supports supported disc games; a disc-free console such as Xbox Series S cannot use a physical disc as its license.

The feature lets owners claim a digital entitlement for supported titles, but eligibility and supported benefits vary by game. Do not assume a particular disc qualifies; check Xbox’s announcement and claim process: Your Discs. Now Also Digital. Xbox says the physical disc continues to work as before, and most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support the feature.

Do you need to move the installed game files?
No. For a digital game, downloading it again on the new console is an option. If you want to avoid downloading a large library, supported console network transfer or an external drive can move installed files. This saves download time where supported, but it does not transfer ownership or replace cloud save synchronization. See Xbox’s transfer guidance: Transfer games and apps to another Xbox.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if other people use the old console’s games?
Sharing a purchased library is not the same as transferring ownership. Microsoft ties access for other users on a console to the purchaser’s designated Home Xbox, and documents a one-game-instance-at-a-time rule for the account. If household members relied on the old console’s shared games, review the Home Xbox assignment before changing consoles: Set your Home Xbox.

Quick checklist before switching
- Confirm which account bought each digital game and sign in to that account on the new console.
- Check that the games you want to play are compatible with the new console and that any subscription entitlement still applies.
- Connect the old Xbox to the internet and let supported games sync their latest saves before you stop using it.
- For disc games, bring the disc and use a console with a compatible drive, unless that specific title has an eligible claimed Disc-to-Digital entitlement.
- Use network transfer or external storage only if you want to avoid downloading installed files again; saves and licenses are handled separately.
- Review Home Xbox sharing if other household accounts use the old console’s library.
