After Apple receives a trade-in, it says the device is inspected and assessed for reuse or recycling. It may be prepared for another owner, contribute parts for repair, or enter material-recovery processing. Apple does not publish the route taken by each individual device, so a trade-in is not a promise that your specific iPhone will be refurbished or resold.
How Apple decides what happens to a trade-in
Apple presents Trade In as a way to receive value for an eligible device or recycle it at no cost. For devices it receives, Apple says: “When we receive your device, it will be thoroughly inspected and assessed for reuse or recycling.” The inspection is a sorting decision; it does not disclose a guaranteed outcome for a particular unit. Apple Trade In
Apple’s public reporting describes several possible routes, but does not provide a device-by-device chain of custody or proportions for each route. Its aggregate figures therefore cannot tell you whether your old phone will be reused whole, dismantled for parts, or recycled.

Three possible routes after inspection
| Route | What it means | What Apple reports | What is not disclosed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole-device reuse | A device is prepared to be used by another owner. | Apple says it sent over 15 million devices and accessories to new owners for reuse in 2025 across several programs. | Whether a particular trade-in device was refurbished or resold. |
| Parts reuse | Components are recovered or refurbished for use as replacement parts. | Apple says it is expanding the parts it recovers or refurbishes for replacement use, subject to its quality and performance standards. | Which components, if any, came from a particular device. |
| Material recovery | A product or parts are disassembled and processed to recover materials. | Apple describes screening and advanced recycling systems, including Daisy and Cora, and names Dave and Taz in its supply-chain disassembly and recovery work. | The facility, specific process, material yield, or robot used for a particular device. |
Whole-device reuse
Apple’s 2026 Environmental Progress Report says it collects devices for refurbishment and reuse through Apple Trade In, the iPhone Upgrade Program, AppleCare service, and its corporate Hardware Reuse Program. Its figure of over 15 million devices and accessories sent to new owners in 2025 covers those reuse programs collectively; it is not a Trade In-only count. Apple 2026 Environmental Progress Report

Parts reuse
A device need not be suitable for another owner to have components that remain useful. Apple says it is increasing the parts recovered or refurbished for replacement use when they meet its quality and performance standards. The company does not identify the components recovered from an individual trade-in.
Material recovery
Apple says devices brought in for free recycling are screened; eligible devices may be sent to advanced systems including Daisy and Cora. Products or parts that cannot be reused or repaired may enter those systems. Apple’s supply-chain description also names Daisy, Dave, and Taz in disassembly and recovery work. These descriptions explain available pathways, not a guarantee that every recycled trade-in goes through a named robot. Apple newsroom, April 16, 2026 Apple Supply Chain Innovation

What Apple’s reported numbers do—and do not—show
Apple’s 2026 report says Trade In was available in 29 countries. Separately, it says the company operates or participates in take-back and recycling collection programs in 99 percent of countries where it sells products. Those are different measures: the broader recycling-program footprint does not mean Trade In is offered in 99 percent of markets. Eligibility and transaction terms depend on the local program. The report also says customer and employee programs directed more than 43,000 metric tons of electronic scrap to recycling facilities in 2025; this is a program-wide scrap figure, not a count or fate breakdown of traded-in phones. Apple 2026 Environmental Progress Report
For comparison, Apple’s 2025 report said 15.9 million devices and accessories were sent to new owners for reuse in 2024. Apple’s newer report gives the 2025 result as “over 15 million,” with different rounding. Neither figure isolates Trade In. Apple says Bureau Veritas verifies certain environmental footprint data and Fraunhofer Institute verifies product-related scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions calculated with life-cycle assessment; that verification statement does not establish an audit of every trade-in’s destination. Can you know whether your device will be refurbished?
Not from Apple’s public reporting. Apple reports aggregate reuse and recycling activity and describes its systems, but does not publish the destination or outcome of each trade-in unit. A device’s model, condition, and suitability may affect its assessment, but the available information does not support predicting the route for a specific device or assigning a likelihood to resale.
For the same reason, the aggregate reuse figures are not enough to rank the environmental impact of trading in a particular device against keeping, repairing, or replacing it. That comparison would require lifecycle evidence for the device and the alternative.

Prepare your device before handing it over
- Back up your data. Use the backup method appropriate to your device before sending it or taking it to a drop-off location.
- Remove personal information. Follow Apple’s preparation instructions for your device and market; do not rely on downstream inspection to erase your data.
- Check the current local Trade In instructions. If mailing the device, follow the program’s current packaging and battery-shipping directions. Start with Apple Trade In.
Why a trade-in estimate may change
In the U.S. program, Apple says it may revise the value after inspection if the device’s condition differs from the customer’s description. Apple’s published terms allow the customer to accept or reject a lower revised offer. The value, credit method, timing, and other terms can vary by market, device, and transaction, so check the local Trade In page for the terms that apply to your handoff.
