When Xbox Game Pass expires, you lose subscription access to games in its library; a title can also become unavailable when it leaves the catalog. That does not establish what happens to your save data: Xbox’s published information cited here does not say whether saves remain accessible after a subscription ends. Treat game access and save retention as separate questions, and check the current guidance for your game and platform before canceling if continuing a save matters.
What happens to Game Pass games when your subscription ends?
Xbox says subscribers have access to games in the Game Pass library until the subscription is canceled or expires, or the game leaves the library. A subscription therefore provides access while its terms apply; it does not mean you own every game in the catalog. See Xbox’s current Game Pass games listing for the catalog relevant to your circumstances.

Catalog titles and availability can change, and Xbox says they vary by region, plan, and platform. Check the listing for the specific game and your location rather than assuming a title is included or available everywhere.

The Xbox pages cited here do not establish whether a particular game’s saves remain accessible after Game Pass expires, or whether they are deleted. Losing subscription access is not the same thing as proving that save data has been deleted. These sources also do not guarantee that a save will be available to resume if you later buy the game.

If continuing a save is important, check current Xbox support information and the game’s guidance for your exact platform and title before your subscription ends. Do not rely on an assumption that saves are either permanently retained or automatically erased.
Can you keep playing after a game leaves the catalog?
One possible route is to buy a game separately, but availability and play options depend on the title. Xbox says select cloud-playable games that are not included with Game Pass can be streamed when you own or buy them. That option applies only to eligible titles and does not mean every Game Pass game is sold separately, cloud-playable, or available as a physical copy.

Xbox lists an eligible subscription, supported game, supported device, and supported region among the requirements for cloud play, with a separate exception for select free-to-play games. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming information to see whether the game and your setup qualify. Buying a game does not, on the information cited here, guarantee restoration of Game Pass-only benefits or every cloud feature.
Subscription access versus buying a game
| Access route | What must be true | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass library | The subscription is active and the title remains in the catalog for your region, plan, and platform, as reflected in Xbox’s Game Pass listing. | Library access lasts until the subscription is canceled or expires, or the game leaves the library. |
| Separate purchase | The title must be offered for purchase. For cloud streaming, it must also be one of the select cloud-playable games, and the relevant game, device, and region must be supported. | Ownership can enable streaming for eligible titles; it does not establish that every game is purchasable or that every cloud feature is included. |
Neither route, in the official pages cited above, answers whether a particular save remains available after Game Pass ends. Check your account’s displayed subscription end date before planning around the transition; the general access rule does not specify the timing or consequences of every cancellation flow.
