Both Powerwash and ChromeOS recovery erase files stored locally on your Chromebook. That includes items in Downloads. Neither operation deletes copies already stored in Google Drive or on an external drive, but you should verify that important files are backed up before proceeding.

What happens to files in a Powerwash?

Powerwash is a factory reset. Google says it erases user data on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including Downloads, and removes apps and settings. Files stored only on the Chromebook are therefore at risk.

Google Drive files and files on external storage are not deleted by the reset. They are separate copies, not part of the Chromebook’s local drive. Google’s factory-reset instructions explain what Powerwash removes.

Does Chromebook recovery erase files too?

Yes. ChromeOS recovery removes and reinstalls the operating system, and Google says it permanently erases everything on the Chromebook’s hard drive, including downloaded files. Previously backed-up copies in Google Drive or on external storage are not part of that local wipe.

Recovery is generally intended for serious ChromeOS problems, such as an error saying “ChromeOS is missing or damaged,” or when other troubleshooting has failed. Google recommends restarting first and trying a factory reset if the Chromebook is still usable. See Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions.

Powerwash and recovery compared

Operation What it does Effect on local files Effect on cloud or external copies
Powerwash Restores factory settings and erases user data Deletes local files, including Downloads, along with apps and settings Does not delete Google Drive or external-storage copies
ChromeOS recovery Removes and reinstalls ChromeOS Permanently erases hard-drive contents, including downloaded files Backed-up copies are outside the Chromebook’s local drive wipe

Find out where your files are before resetting

Chromebook downloads go to the local Downloads folder by default. Files can also be saved in Google Drive or on external storage; these are distinct locations in the Files app. Google’s Files app guidance describes managing files and storage.

  1. Open the Files app and check Downloads and any other local folders for files you need.
  2. Copy important local files to Google Drive or compatible external storage. Google’s Powerwash guidance recommends backing up files and syncing information and settings where applicable; its Chromebook migration guidance describes USB thumb drives and external hard drives as backup destinations.
  3. Confirm the copied files are present in the backup location before you start the reset or recovery.
  4. If you used an external drive, safely eject it after the copy finishes. Keep backup storage separate from the Chromebook while carrying out the destructive operation.

Recovery media: internet or USB

Some newer Chromebooks may offer recovery over an internet connection, so a USB drive is not required for every device. If internet recovery is unavailable or unsupported, Google’s USB method calls for a flash drive that can hold at least 8 GB. Preparing recovery media erases that flash drive, so do not use a drive containing files you want to keep. Check Google’s recovery instructions for the method available to your Chromebook.

What “erase” means—and what may remain

For ordinary file planning, the key point is that Google describes both operations as erasing local user files. But “erase” should not be read as a guarantee that every trace of every kind of device information disappears. Google’s Chrome Enterprise and Education data-handling guidance describes Powerwash as clearing cryptographic keys, while noting that some device health and diagnostics information, forced-enrollment information, and data stored off-device may persist or remain accessible. It also discusses temporary encrypted files that cannot be decrypted and are overwritten or removed during normal operation.

This technical description is not a promise about forensic recovery on a particular Chromebook. It does distinguish local user documents from diagnostics, management information, and cloud-side data: synced files and other off-device information are not deleted simply by Powerwashing the Chromebook.

If you already reset or recovered the Chromebook

Check Google Drive and any external backups for copies of the files. Google’s cited instructions do not give a general restoration guarantee or success rate for files that existed only on the Chromebook when it was erased, so do not assume local files can be recovered.

Forgotten password is a separate kind of recovery

Recovering ChromeOS, recovering a Google Account password, and regaining access to local files are different processes. Google says its Local data recovery feature can provide access to local Chromebook data after a forgotten password if the feature was enabled. Availability begins with ChromeOS M118 on supported devices. Without that feature, recovering the Google Account password restores account access but does not itself provide access to locally stored Chromebook data. Details are in Google’s Local data recovery guidance.
