Your Apple Cash balance is not automatically forfeited just because you stop using Apple Pay or turn Apple Cash off on a device. The account stays open, and Green Dot Bank’s current fee table lists a $0 inactivity fee. However, Green Dot may transfer an inactive balance to the appropriate state under that state’s unclaimed-property law, so moving or spending the money is the safest choice if you no longer plan to use Apple Cash.

What happens to your balance when you stop using Apple Pay?

Apple Cash is an account provided by Green Dot Bank; it is separate from Apple Pay generally, Apple Card, and your Apple Account. Simply stopping Apple Pay use does not close the Apple Cash account or automatically remove its balance. Apple also says turning off Apple Cash in Settings on one device leaves the account open and its funds in the balance, although Apple Cash is unavailable on that device. Apple’s instructions for turning off or closing Apple Cash explain the distinction.

Green Dot lists the Apple Cash inactivity fee as $0 in its current Apple Cash terms and fee information. That fee is distinct from a possible transfer of abandoned funds to a state. The terms say Green Dot may escheat funds if there is no account activity or you do not communicate with the bank within the period specified by state law. There is no single nationwide countdown stated in these terms; the applicable period depends on state law. If funds are transferred to a state, the owner may be able to claim them through the relevant state’s unclaimed-property process.

Choose what to do with an unused Apple Cash account

Choice What happens What you need to do
Leave the account open The balance remains in Apple Cash, but state-law escheatment may apply after the relevant inactivity period. The current listed inactivity fee is $0. No immediate action is required, but this does not guarantee the balance will remain there indefinitely.
Turn off Apple Cash on a device The account stays open and the balance remains in it; Apple Cash is unavailable on the device where you turned it off. Turn it off in Settings if you want to disable the feature on that device. This does not close the account.
Transfer or spend the balance Money transferred to your bank leaves Apple Cash; purchases use the balance. Transfer it to a U.S. bank account or spend it before you stop using the account.
Close the account The Apple Cash account is closed after you meet the provider’s requirements. Clear pending transactions, bring the balance to $0, satisfy the zero-balance period in the terms, then contact an Apple Cash Specialist at Green Dot Bank.

How to move your Apple Cash balance to a bank

Apple Support describes transfers from Apple Cash to a U.S. bank account. A standard bank transfer has no fee. Instant Transfer to an eligible debit card is fee-based; Apple’s current support guidance lists a 1.7% fee, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum. Fees and transfer options can change, so check the amount shown in Wallet before confirming an Instant Transfer. See Apple’s Apple Cash transfer and account guidance for the current process.

How to close an Apple Cash account

  1. Settle pending transactions. Resolve any payments or other pending activity before requesting closure.
  2. Bring the balance to $0. Transfer the funds to a bank or otherwise use the balance.
  3. Meet the terms’ waiting condition. Green Dot’s current terms specify a registered account with a $0 balance for at least 30 consecutive days, along with any other conditions the bank may set.
  4. Contact an Apple Cash Specialist at Green Dot Bank. Apple’s support instructions direct customers to contact the specialist to close the account once the balance and pending transactions are cleared. Use the contact options in Apple’s account closure instructions.

Closing the account does not mean all records are deleted immediately. Apple says it retains account information, including transaction history, as required by law and for fraud prevention; its notice does not specify one universal retention period. Apple’s Apple Cash privacy notice describes this information handling.

Turning Apple Cash off does not cancel recurring payments

Apple says turning off Apple Cash in Settings does not stop recurring payments set up through Apple Cash. If you have one, inspect and cancel it separately rather than assuming that disabling the feature—or ceasing to use Apple Pay—will end it. Apple’s Apple Cash account guidance covers turning off the feature and account closure.

If you think the balance was already transferred to a state

Because the relevant inactivity period depends on state law, the cited terms do not establish a universal date when funds would move. Contact Green Dot Bank about the account and check the unclaimed-property office for the state that may hold the funds. Apple identifies Green Dot Bank as the Apple Cash provider; it is the relevant bank for questions about account terms and status.
