It depends on the workflow engine and its configured failure policy. A failed task may be retried, routed to a fallback step, or cause the entire workflow execution to fail. In some systems, an orchestration task can fail while the overall execution stays open. The key is to identify what failed and which recovery rules apply.
Does a task failure mean the whole workflow failed?
Not necessarily. “Task failure” can refer to a unit of work failing, the orchestrator failing while processing workflow logic, or the workflow execution reaching a terminal Failed status. Those are different events, and their consequences depend on the platform and workflow configuration.
For example, Temporal distinguishes a Workflow Task failure from a Workflow Execution failure. A Workflow Task failure leaves the execution open and is retried automatically by the service. A Workflow Execution failure closes it with a Failed status. See Temporal’s task documentation for the platform’s explanation of these failure types.
What determines whether the task is retried or handled another way?
The workflow’s failure policy controls what happens next. It may specify which errors to retry, the number of attempts and backoff, or a fallback state to run after an error. If no applicable handling is configured, the platform may fail the execution.

In AWS Step Functions, an unhandled runtime error causes the state machine execution to fail by default. Task, Parallel, and Map states can define Retry rules and Catch handlers. A catcher can route the workflow to a named fallback state, including after retries are exhausted; that transition does not mean the original task succeeded or that its external side effects were undone. AWS describes these options in its error-handling documentation.
Timeouts count as failures too
A task that runs beyond its configured timeout can fail. For Step Functions activities, a missed heartbeat interval can also cause a timeout. The task documentation explains how timeouts, heartbeats, input/output handling, retries, and catchers apply to Task states.

What happens to the workflow’s state data?
There is no universal rule that state is either preserved exactly or rolled back. In Step Functions, state input passes through the workflow, and task results can be included in output. Input/output filters and catcher configuration affect what the next state receives. A retry or fallback transition is control flow; it is not a guarantee that changes made by the failed task to an external system have been reversed.
Check the specific workflow definition and execution history to see what input, output, and error details were available at each step. The behavior can vary with state configuration and with how the task interacts with systems outside the orchestrator.

Can you resume or restart a failed workflow?
Recovery is product- and workflow-specific. Step Functions redrive can restart unsuccessful Standard Workflow executions from the step that failed, was aborted, or timed out. For Task, Parallel, and Inline Map states with configured retries, AWS says retry attempt counts reset to zero when rerun on redrive. Check AWS’s current redrive documentation for eligibility and limits before relying on this option.
Temporal handles recovery differently: a configured Workflow Retry Policy starts a new run after an execution failure, under the same Workflow ID, until the workflow succeeds or retries are exhausted. Each run has its own event history, so a new run is not the same event history continuing unchanged. Consult Temporal’s documentation and the workflow’s settings to determine whether that policy is configured.

How to diagnose a failed task
- Identify the failure layer. Check whether a task attempt failed, orchestration work failed, or the overall workflow execution closed as Failed, Canceled, or another status.
- Inspect retry and timeout settings. Look for eligible errors, maximum attempts, backoff, task timeouts, and heartbeat requirements. A timeout may be the triggering failure rather than an application error.
- Check for fallback handling. Determine whether the failed state has a catcher or equivalent route, and inspect the error information passed to the next step.
- Verify the available recovery action. The platform may retry automatically, support redrive from a failed step, start a new run, or require a new execution. Confirm which option applies to the product and workflow type.
- Review side effects before retrying. If the task changed an external system before failing, verify whether repeating it is safe; workflow retry or fallback behavior alone does not establish that those changes were rolled back.
