A robot does not come out of a steel-melting furnace intact. If its steel frame is separated, prepared and accepted as suitable scrap, that steel can be melted with other scrap and used to make new steel. Batteries, electronics, copper wiring, motors, plastics and other parts are separate material streams—not steel by default.
Why a robot cannot simply be treated as a lump of steel
A robot is a mixed assembly. Its frame may contain steel, while motors, wiring, circuit boards, batteries, plastics, lubricants and other parts may contain non-ferrous, combustible, hazardous or otherwise unsuitable material. The exact mix depends on the robot’s design; there is no established standard percentage of steel or other materials that applies to robots generally.
Steel scrap is a normal steelmaking feedstock. The American Iron and Steel Institute says American steelmaking furnaces consume nearly 70 million tons of domestic steel scrap annually to make new steel; its page does not state a publication year. That is a figure for steel scrap overall, not for robots or robot recycling. AISI: Recycling

The steel frame can be recycled—but only after preparation
Furnace-bound scrap must meet the receiving facility’s requirements. The EU’s end-of-waste criteria describe sorting, separating, cleaning, de-polluting and other mechanical preparation before scrap is used directly in steelworks or foundries. They also exclude specified combustible non-metallic materials and closed containers that could cause an explosion. These are EU criteria, not a universal teardown rule. In the United States, rules for certain electric arc furnace steelmaking facilities address scrap contaminants including chlorinated plastics, lead and free organic liquids. They call for removing lead-containing components such as batteries and battery cables to the extent practicable. The applicable requirements depend on the facility and jurisdiction. 40 CFR § 63.10685
Why electronics, batteries and other parts are separated
Components that are not suitable for the steel furnace may have their own recovery or treatment routes. UK guidance for permitted waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) treatment facilities describes removing batteries, cables and other components. It is an example of UK guidance, not a universal recipe for every robot or recycler. UK WEEE treatment guidance

- Batteries and cables: They should be identified and assessed separately rather than assumed to belong in the furnace charge.
- Electronics and circuit boards: Their materials and potential hazards differ from steel, so their treatment depends on the equipment and available authorized facilities.
- Motors and copper: These may contain non-ferrous metals that are not converted into steel in an EAF.
- Plastics, lubricants and other non-metallic materials: Their presence can affect scrap acceptance and contamination controls.
Whether a component is reused, remanufactured, or sent for material recovery or other treatment depends on its condition, construction, recycler and local law. The available sources do not establish a standard recovery rate for robot parts.

What the furnace does to accepted steel
An electric arc furnace (EAF) melts accepted scrap to make steel. Once the prepared steel frame material is charged and melted, the robot’s shape and identity are gone: its steel has become part of a molten metal stream processed into new steel products. General steelmaking sources do not trace a particular robot’s atoms to a specific finished product, and they do not document a whole robot being charged into an EAF.

Scrap-based steelmaking is an established route. Tata Steel said its Ludhiana EAF, inaugurated on 20 March 2026, would use 100% steel scrap. That is a statement about that plant, not every furnace or about whole robots. Tata Steel’s Ludhiana EAF announcement
Keep steel-recycling figures in perspective
Steel-industry figures describe steel and steelmaking—not robot recycling. AISI reports nearly 70 million tons of domestic steel scrap consumed annually by American steelmaking furnaces and says greater than 90 percent of steelmaking co-products are reused or recycled; the page does not state a publication year. Neither figure tells how many robots are recycled or what share of a robot is recovered. AISI: Recycling

What to check before sending a robot for recycling
- Identify the robot’s model and, if available, its materials or component documentation. Do not assume a generic composition.
- Ask a local recycler whether it accepts the complete robot, or only separated scrap, and whether it is authorized to handle the relevant equipment and waste streams.
- Ask how batteries, electronics, wiring, oils or lubricants, and other non-steel parts must be identified or removed. Follow the recycler’s and local authorities’ directions rather than attempting hazardous disassembly without suitable expertise.
- Confirm which parts, if any, can be reused or remanufactured before the remaining materials are processed.
Safety standards do not make a robot ready for the furnace
ISO 13578:2017 covers safety requirements for machinery and equipment used in steel production by electric arc furnaces. ISO’s catalog says the edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2022, remains current, and is being updated in 2026. The catalog also says robots and manipulators are outside the equipment for which the standard specifies safety requirements. It is not a certification or disposal standard for robot teardown.
