Whether you lose a Modern Warfare 4 preorder bonus—or can get your money back—depends on where you ordered, your country, and what content you have already downloaded or played. The clearest bonus-specific rule is for PlayStation in the UK: immediately accessible preorder extras stop working if you cancel. Other stores’ published policies do not establish a single bonus rule for every MW4 order.
First, identify the seller and the type of preorder
Cancellation and refund terms come from the storefront or retailer that took your order, not from one universal Modern Warfare 4 policy. Activision describes digital preorder incentives and Vault Edition content, and says physical editions are available through select retailers, but it does not set a common rule for cancelling every order or revoking every bonus. Activision’s edition information can help identify the edition and incentives you bought; the seller’s terms determine what happens to your order.
- Digital order: Check the storefront’s rules for refunds, downloads, and early access.
- Physical order: Check the retailer’s cancellation terms. If it issued a bonus code, ask whether a code already redeemed remains usable.
- Region: Policies can differ by country. The PlayStation policy discussed below is specifically for the UK.
What each store’s policy says
PlayStation Store: UK policy says accessible extras stop working
Under PlayStation’s UK cancellation policy, a qualifying digital preorder may be cancelled for a refund before release if the main product has not started downloading or streaming, subject to the policy’s timing rules. If the main product download or stream has started, a refund is generally unavailable unless the item is faulty.

The policy directly addresses preorder extras: if the main product has not started downloading and the preorder included immediately accessible extra content, that content “will stop working if you cancel your pre-order.” Automatic downloads may affect refund eligibility. These are UK terms; check the policy for your own country rather than assuming the same conditions apply everywhere.

Microsoft Store: pre-release cancellation after billing is refunded
Microsoft says that if you cancel a preorder after it has been billed but before release, the cancellation is processed as a refund. The Microsoft Store preorder guidance does not specify what happens to each MW4 bonus entitlement, so it does not support a promise that every bonus will be removed—or retained.
Steam: Advanced Access playtime counts toward the refund limit
Steam allows a pre-purchased game to be refunded any time before release under its standard refund policy. After release, the usual eligibility criteria are a request within 14 days and less than two hours of playtime. If MW4 offers Advanced Access, time played during that period counts toward the two-hour limit. See Steam’s refund policy and Steam’s guidance on pre-purchased games. Those pages do not establish which MW4 preorder bonuses are revoked after cancellation.

Activision Store: refund goes to the original payment method
For an order placed directly through the Activision Store, its cancellation policy says a successful cancellation is refunded to the original payment method. This policy applies to Activision Store orders; do not assume it governs purchases from PlayStation, Microsoft, Steam, or another retailer.

Activision confirms that physical editions are sold through select retailers, but does not publish one cancellation deadline, refund procedure, or rule for a retailer-issued bonus code. Contact the retailer and ask both whether the order can be cancelled and whether a bonus code already issued or redeemed remains usable.

Check these details before cancelling
- Confirm who sold the preorder. Find the receipt or order history and use that seller’s cancellation process.
- Check your country’s terms. Do not apply the cited PlayStation UK rules to a different region without checking its policy.
- Check whether the main game started downloading or streaming. On PlayStation UK, this can affect refund eligibility; automatic downloads may matter too.
- Note whether a bonus was already accessible. Under the cited PlayStation UK policy, immediately accessible extras stop working when the preorder is cancelled.
- If you used Advanced Access on Steam, check your playtime. Early-access play counts toward Steam’s two-hour refund limit.
- For a physical copy, ask about bonus codes explicitly. The retailer—not a universal Activision rule—sets the relevant order terms.
