Your Fortnite skins, purchases, and progress stay on the Epic Games account where they were earned or acquired. Unlinking a PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo account removes that console account’s access to them; it does not transfer them to another Epic account or erase the original profile. Link the console to the Epic account that holds your progress to access it again.

What unlinking changes—and what it does not

Fortnite progress and purchases are stored on an Epic Games account. Epic says that after you unlink a console account, the console can no longer access the progress and purchases on the Epic account it was connected to, but the data remains on that Epic account. See Epic Games Support’s unlinking guidance.

Unlinking is not a way to move skins or progress to a different Epic account. If you connect the console to another Epic account, Fortnite shows the progress associated with that other account instead. Epic states that Fortnite progress stays with the Epic account on which it was built; it cannot be merged or transferred by unlinking and relinking. Epic’s account-sync recovery guidance explains this distinction.

Why Fortnite may look like it started over

If you launch Fortnite from a console that is no longer linked to the Epic account with your progress, you may be prompted to sign in or create an account. Epic may create a new, empty Epic account for that console connection. The resulting level 1 profile does not mean your original skins or progress were deleted; it means the console is not currently accessing the Epic account that has them.

How to get your original skins and progress back

  1. Identify the Epic account with your original progress. Sign in to the Epic accounts you use and check which one contains the Fortnite profile and cosmetics you want. Epic recommends confirming the accounts before changing links.
  2. Check the console’s current connection. Sign in to the Epic account currently linked to the console and open Account settings > Linked accounts. Epic’s interface may change, so follow the current prompts on the Epic unlink support page and in your account.
  3. Unlink only if needed. Select Unlink beside the relevant PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo account, then read and follow the on-screen warnings.
  4. Connect the console to the Epic account with the original progress. Sign in to that Epic account and link the platform account from its Linked accounts settings.

If the console is attached to a newly created empty Epic account, Epic’s recovery instructions describe registering and verifying that account if necessary, unlinking the console from it, and then linking the console to the Epic account with the original progress. Contact Epic Support if you cannot complete those steps or still see the wrong profile.

What happens to skins, purchases, and V-Bucks?

Cosmetic items are shared across platforms connected to the same Epic Games account. Unlinking a console breaks its connection to that account; it does not move the items to a different account. Once you use Fortnite on platforms linked to the Epic account that owns the items, those cosmetics should be available there.

V-Bucks balances have separate platform rules. Epic’s V-Bucks sharing guidance says:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • V-Bucks purchased on Nintendo Switch are not shared with other platforms.
  • In Korea, V-Bucks purchased on PC are not shared with other platforms.
  • V-Bucks earned through Fortnite Passes, Quest Packs, or Save the World are shared across platforms.
  • Items bought with V-Bucks are available on the platforms where you play Fortnite.

As a result, a balance that looks different on another platform does not necessarily mean the skins bought with V-Bucks are missing.

Fortnite Physical Gift Card
  • An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
  • If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
  • The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Can you link a different PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo account?

You may be able to replace a platform account with another account of the same platform type, but Epic can require you to remove a linking restriction first. Epic says restriction removal is limited to once every 365 days and cannot be bypassed. Check the current instructions for linking a different platform account and your account page before unlinking; do not assume you can immediately attach a replacement.

If the Epic account being disconnected has an active Fortnite Crew subscription, Epic advises canceling it before unlinking. Epic says it will not receive new rewards after the unlink. Review the current Crew and account details before proceeding.

Before you unlink: a quick decision check

  • You want to keep playing with the same console account: Leave it linked unless there is a specific problem to solve.
  • You want your existing skins and progress on that console: First confirm which Epic account holds them; relink the console to that account rather than expecting a transfer.
  • You want to switch to another account of the same platform: Check whether the 365-day restriction applies before removing the current link.
  • You have Fortnite Crew on the account being unlinked: Check the subscription and cancel it first if needed, because Epic says new rewards will stop after unlinking.
  • Your V-Bucks balance differs between platforms: Check whether the balance includes Switch-purchased V-Bucks or, in Korea, PC-purchased V-Bucks, which are not shared.
