A distribution cut immediately reduces the cash an Energy Transfer (ET) unitholder receives at the new rate. It may also influence how investors value the units, but it does not dictate a particular unit-price move. Because ET is a publicly traded partnership, its cash distributions are also separate from the taxable income reported on a Schedule K-1.

What changes first when a distribution is cut?

Your cash payment changes according to the new per-unit rate and the number of units you hold. To estimate a quarterly payment, multiply your units by the announced quarterly distribution per unit; account-specific withholding or treatment may affect the amount deposited.

For example, ET’s official history shows that its common-unit distribution fell from $0.305 per unit in the first and second quarters of 2020 to $0.1525 in the third and fourth quarters. That was a 50% reduction. For 100 units, the quarterly amount went from $30.50 to $15.25. At four payments per year, those rates work out to $122 and $61, respectively, assuming each rate held for all four quarters. Energy Transfer’s distribution history records the quarterly amounts.

What does ET’s distribution history show?

Period Common-unit distribution What it means
First and second quarters of 2020 $0.305 per unit per quarter Rate before the reduction shown for the third quarter
Third quarter of 2020 through third quarter of 2021 $0.1525 per unit per quarter Half the earlier rate
Fourth quarter of 2021 $0.175 per unit ET announced a 15% increase from $0.1525
Fourth quarter of 2022 $0.305 per unit The distribution history records a return to this rate
First quarter of 2026 $0.3375 per unit Officially listed quarterly rate
Second quarter of 2026 $0.3400 per unit Paid August 19, 2026; four payments at this rate would total $1.36, an annualized calculation rather than a promised future rate

ET’s January 25, 2022 announcement said increases would be evaluated quarterly while balancing its leverage target, growth opportunities, and unit buybacks. The announcement described the fourth-quarter 2021 increase to $0.175 per unit. Read the distribution increase announcement.

Does a cut automatically lower ET’s unit price?

No fixed price change follows automatically. Lower expected cash income may affect how some investors value the units, particularly investors focused on income. ET’s 2025 Form 10-K says demand and yield considerations can affect the common-unit trading price, but it provides no formula that predicts the price response to a cut. Broader market conditions and company-specific developments also matter. The 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 19, 2026, discusses these risks.

Why can a partnership change its distribution?

ET says distributions are not guaranteed and may fluctuate with its performance and external factors. Available cash depends on more than reported profit: the company identifies operating cash generation, distributions from subsidiaries, spending, debt service, reserves, market conditions, and other factors. A coverage figure or a profitable period alone does not promise a particular future payout.

For context, ET’s August 5, 2020 second-quarter results reported a 1.54x distribution coverage ratio for that quarter, along with operating-cost savings and lower expected capital spending. Those results describe the quarter before the reduction recorded for the third quarter; they do not establish one definitive reason for the subsequent cut. ET’s second-quarter 2020 results release provides the contemporaneous figures.

How is a cash distribution different from K-1 taxable income?

ET is a publicly traded partnership. Its cash payment to you is not necessarily equal to your share of taxable income or to the tax you may owe. ET’s Form 10-K states that unitholders may have to pay federal income tax, and in some cases state and local income tax, on their share of partnership taxable income whether or not they receive cash distributions. A lower cash payment by itself does not determine the taxable income allocated to an individual holder.

The company also says distributions exceeding a holder’s allocated net taxable income reduce that holder’s tax basis. If units are later sold, the tax calculation compares the amount realized with adjusted basis; some gain may be treated as ordinary income because of recapture items. The outcome depends on the holder’s K-1 history and circumstances, so a distribution change alone cannot establish an individual tax result. See the relevant tax disclosures in ET’s 2025 Form 10-K.

What should an ET unitholder check after a cut?

  • Cash impact: Compare the old and new quarterly per-unit amounts, then multiply each by the number of units held. Annualized arithmetic assumes the stated rate continues for four payments.
  • Effective date and later changes: Confirm which quarter uses the new rate and check the issuer’s subsequent distribution history rather than assuming the cut is permanent.
  • Cash-flow context: Read company-reported coverage, cash, debt, spending, and capital-allocation information with the period and definitions attached. A past quarter is not a guarantee of future distributions.
  • Tax records: Keep the K-1s and basis information relevant to your holding period, especially if you sold units.

ET says its 2025 tax package includes Schedule K-1 (Form 1065), state and ownership schedules, supplemental information, instructions, and a sales schedule for units sold during 2025. The company notes that tax-package support is not tax advice. ET’s K-1 and K-3 tax package information explains the package. For questions about a sale, allocation, or adjusted basis, consult a qualified tax adviser familiar with publicly traded partnerships.
