A court staff strike does not automatically cancel your hearing or extend your filing deadline. Courts may keep urgent work running, limit clerk-counter services, change filing channels, or reschedule particular hearings. The current notice from your court, your case docket, and any order in your case determine what applies.

Will a court hearing be cancelled during a staff strike?

Not necessarily. Hearing schedules are court- and case-specific: a court may continue emergency or legally mandated work while restricting other services, and it may reschedule some hearings without cancelling all proceedings. Check the official notice for the courthouse and division handling your case, then verify your hearing on the case docket or with the court. Do not rely on a general strike announcement to establish that your particular hearing is off.

For example, the Superior Court of California, County of San Francisco, said in February 2026 that it would remain open for mandated essential and emergency services if SEIU Local 1021 proceeded with a strike. Court Executive Officer Brandon E. Riley said, “Mandated services will proceed with the help of management employees who will triage and prioritize emergency matters for people who need help today.” The court also described prioritizing cases with statutory deadlines, including criminal cases and custody arraignments. These were local plans, not a schedule or rule for other courts. San Francisco court release, February 24, 2026; San Francisco strike-day release.

A separate San Francisco notice described reduced operations effective February 26, 2026, and warned that clerk offices might be closed to the public. It said the changes were intended to protect defendants’ constitutional rights and meet statutory deadlines. A closed public counter therefore does not, by itself, establish that hearings have stopped or that deadlines have changed. San Francisco labor-action notice.

Does a strike extend filing deadlines?

Do not assume so. A strike announcement, reduced courthouse hours, or a closed clerk counter does not by itself move a due date. Treat your existing deadline as active unless a rule that applies to your case or an order from the court clearly changes it. Check the latest operational notice and any order in your case; if the effect is unclear and the deadline matters, contact the court or a qualified lawyer promptly.

Official notices from other disruptions illustrate why the details matter, but they are not strike rules for other courts. During a federal funding lapse in November 2025, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York said Friday deadlines would not be impacted or automatically extended. Its order kept CM/ECF filing available and said papers placed in its designated secure drop box on Friday would be deemed filed that Friday. That applied to that court and event only. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit likewise said during a funding lapse that electronic filing remained available and deadlines stayed in effect. The U.S. Court of Federal Claims said proceedings and deadlines would remain as scheduled unless the presiding judge ordered otherwise or the court gave further notice. These examples show that a disruption does not necessarily suspend deadlines; the controlling court’s notice or order does. Federal Circuit notice; Court of Federal Claims notice.

How can you file papers if the clerk’s office is closed?

Use only a channel the court has confirmed for your case and document type, and check the court’s rule for when that filing counts as received. Depending on the court, alternatives may include electronic filing, a designated drop box, limited counter hours, or telephone and email assistance. A drop box or an available e-filing system does not automatically tell you which documents it accepts or what timestamp governs.

For instance, a Federal Circuit counter-hours notice described reduced in-person intake, phone and email support, a paper drop box, and continued electronic filing during a funding lapse. Those are examples of possible arrangements, not options available at every court. Federal Circuit counter-hours notice.

  1. Find the current official notice. Check the website for the exact court and courthouse, including the effective date and any newer update.
  2. Verify your case status. Review the docket and any judge-signed order for the hearing date, remote or alternate arrangements, and case-specific deadline changes.
  3. Confirm the filing route and cutoff. Ask the court which channel accepts your document and what filing date and time will apply. Do not infer that a particular channel preserves a deadline.
  4. Keep a record of the attempt. If a court-listed system is unavailable, document what happened and follow the court’s stated contact or emergency process. Ask the court how to preserve the matter.

How are urgent matters handled?

Some courts prioritize urgent matters when staffing is reduced, but the eligible categories and procedures vary. Follow the specific court’s emergency instructions rather than assuming that a matter will be handled under another jurisdiction’s policy.

It also describes keeping official hotlines operational and requirements for authorizing, reporting, reviewing, and giving notice of specified suspensions.
