A YouTube livestream can be interrupted while it is on air, removed later through a copyright removal request, or receive a Content ID claim after it is archived. Those are different outcomes. If YouTube removes an active livestream for copyright, it says the channel receives a copyright strike and loses live-streaming access for seven days. Check the notice status in YouTube Studio and the associated email to find out which situation applies.
What YouTube may do while the stream is live
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. YouTube Help states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.”

If YouTube identifies a match, it may replace the live feed with a placeholder image and warn the creator to stop showing or playing the material. If the creator addresses the match, the broadcast may continue. If the material remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A livestream can also be terminated if the channel receives a copyright or Community Guidelines strike.
An interruption during the broadcast does not, by itself, tell you whether the archived video has been claimed or removed. Check the channel’s notices for the separate status of the live feed, any archive, and any strike.

How the notice status changes the outcome
| Situation | When it happens | What may be affected | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live match | While the broadcast is underway | The live feed may show a placeholder, be interrupted, or be terminated. | Stop or replace the matched material and check YouTube’s warning and Studio notices. |
| Scheduled copyright removal request | During the seven days before the scheduled removal takes effect | If no qualifying action is taken by the deadline, the content may be removed and a strike applied. | Use the options listed in the notice, such as deleting the content before the deadline or seeking a retraction. YouTube says a counter notification cannot be filed until removal is effective and the strike is applied. |
| Effective copyright removal | After YouTube accepts a removal request it considers valid | The content is removed and a copyright strike is applied. If the removed content is an active livestream, live-streaming access is restricted for seven days. | Review the notice and consider the available strike-resolution routes. |
| Content ID claim on an archived livestream | After the livestream ends, if the creator archives it | The archived video may receive a Content ID claim. | Review the claim separately. A post-broadcast claim is not automatically a copyright removal request or a strike. |
What a scheduled removal request means
A scheduled request is a warning with a deadline, not the same as a completed takedown. YouTube says the uploader has seven days to take action to avoid removal and a strike. The notice may offer options such as deleting the content before the deadline or asking the claimant to retract the request.
If the seven days have passed and the removal has taken effect, deleting the video does not resolve the strike. YouTube also says you must wait until the removal is effective and the strike is applied before submitting a counter notification.
What happens to the recording of the stream
If you choose to archive a livestream, YouTube says it makes Content ID claims after the broadcast ends. That post-broadcast claim is distinct from a removal request: a detected match does not mean every archive will be taken down or that a strike will automatically be applied.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the archive’s status in YouTube Studio and read the notice carefully. A live interruption, an archive claim, a scheduled removal, and a completed removal are not interchangeable descriptions.
How to respond to a copyright strike
YouTube lists three routes for resolving a copyright strike. Which route fits depends on the facts and on whether you believe the removal was justified.
Complete Copyright School and wait
YouTube says a strike can expire after you complete Copyright School and wait 90 days. Waiting for it to expire does not reinstate the removed video.
Rank #3
Ask the claimant to retract the request
You can ask the claimant to retract the copyright removal request. A retraction is a request to the claimant; do not treat it as guaranteed or as an automatic result of contacting them.
Submit a counter notification only if justified
A counter notification is a legal request for reinstatement, not a routine appeal. YouTube says it may be appropriate if you believe the removal was mistaken or your use qualifies for an exception such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain. Whether an exception applies depends on the facts and relevant law; YouTube’s process does not determine that question for every case.
YouTube requires a full legal name and physical contact information for a counter notification, and shares it with the claimant. If YouTube forwards a valid counter notification, the claimant has 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action seeking to prevent reinstatement. If the claimant does not do so within that period, YouTube says the content will be reinstated unless you deleted it.
Rank #4
Because this is a legal process with identifying information and consequences, submit a counter notification only if you genuinely believe the removal was mistaken. YouTube warns against false information and misuse of the process.
If you had a licence for the music or video
A licence does not necessarily prevent YouTube from matching or interrupting a livestream. YouTube advises creators using licensed third-party content to ask the rights holder to add their channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a stream may still be interrupted if the channel has not been allowlisted, even when the creator has a licence. Confirm that your permission covers livestreaming and ask the rights holder about Content ID handling; do not assume that purchasing a licence alone prevents a match.

For an active livestream removed for copyright, YouTube states that live-streaming access is restricted for seven days. Check YouTube Studio and the email notice for your account’s current restriction and its end date before planning another broadcast. This seven-day consequence is specific to the stated removal of an active live stream; do not assume it describes every copyright notice or every channel restriction.

Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, not a camera feed: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. YouTube’s copyright matching and removal rules still apply; using a cloud service does not grant rights to third-party material or prevent a copyright action.
