The feed to YouTube stops while your VPS and encoder are down. It resumes only if the encoder starts again, has its settings and video source available, and reconnects using the YouTube stream URL and key. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings affect what happens to the broadcast, but do not guarantee a seamless restart or one uninterrupted 24/7 event.
What happens during the reboot
- The encoder stops sending. While the VPS is restarting, YouTube is not receiving the encoder’s video feed. The length of the interruption depends on how long the server takes to boot and the encoder takes to start and reconnect. YouTube describes a stream as active when its servers receive data from the encoder (Google for Developers: Life of a Broadcast).
- The VPS boots. The encoder starts automatically only if it has been configured to launch during system startup. A program that you started manually before the reboot does not automatically become a boot service.
- The encoder reconnects. It must be able to load its configuration, access its video or playlist, and send data over the network using the configured YouTube stream URL and key (YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- YouTube handles the returning feed according to the broadcast settings and timing. A returning feed does not by itself prove the broadcast stayed active as one continuous event.
Will the livestream restart automatically?
It can, but only if both sides are ready: the VPS must launch the encoder after boot, and the encoder must reconnect with working settings. YouTube’s auto-start setting allows the encoder feed to start the broadcast. YouTube documents that behavior, but does not promise every reconnection after a reboot will continue the same uninterrupted broadcast (Manage live stream settings).
If auto-stop is enabled, YouTube’s API guidance says the broadcast ends around one minute after the channel owner stops sending video. A reboot that lasts longer than that may therefore end the broadcast before the encoder returns. The documentation does not guarantee what will happen to the broadcast on a later reconnection (Life of a Broadcast).

Configure the encoder to start after boot
On a Linux VPS that uses systemd, enable the encoder’s service for the appropriate startup target; starting a service now and enabling it for future boots are separate operations. The systemd manual describes enable as configuring a unit to start at boot and start as launching it immediately (systemctl manual). Exact commands depend on the encoder and the service unit you created, so do not copy a generic unit file without adapting it to your setup.

- Check that the service is enabled and that its state after reboot is what you expect.
- Verify that its command, working directory, credentials, YouTube URL and stream key, and media or playlist paths are available to the service account.
- Check that network access is available when the service starts. A service that launches before its required network or storage is ready may fail to reconnect.
- Review the systemd documentation for how startup targets activate enabled units (systemd.xml).
Choose YouTube auto-start and auto-stop deliberately
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, review the broadcast’s auto-start and auto-stop controls. Auto-start lets streaming from the encoder start the broadcast; auto-stop can end it after sending stops. These options affect broadcast transitions, but neither should be treated as a guarantee that a 24/7 stream survives every outage as one continuous event (YouTube live stream settings; broadcast lifecycle).
The stream key is part of the encoder’s connection configuration, not a reboot-recovery mechanism. A reboot alone does not mean the key has been reset, but the encoder must retain access to the correct key and URL to send its feed (YouTube encoder setup).

Test and verify recovery
- Schedule a restart during a maintenance window rather than relying on an untested configuration during a live broadcast.
- After reboot, check that the encoder service is running and inspect its logs for startup, input, network, or authentication errors.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Confirm that the incoming preview returns and that the stream is receiving data. Google’s API guidance defines an active stream status as YouTube servers receiving data from the encoder (Life of a Broadcast).
- Check the Live tab and the resulting recording after recovery. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance is not a blanket promise of a complete single archive for a 24/7 stream (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
YouTube recommends testing the encoder and checking the preview; its streaming guidance also describes failover testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection (Streaming tips).

- The VPS is up, but no video is arriving: confirm that the encoder service is enabled and running, then check its logs and whether the input file or playlist path is accessible.
- The encoder runs, but YouTube does not show an incoming preview: verify the configured stream URL and key, plus the VPS’s network access. YouTube requires the encoder to use the URL and key set for the stream (encoder setup).
- The broadcast ended during the restart: check whether auto-stop was enabled and how long the feed was absent. YouTube documents an approximately one-minute auto-stop delay; the subsequent broadcast behavior is not guaranteed by that guidance (broadcast lifecycle).
- The service starts but fails intermittently: check whether required files, credentials, network access, and storage are ready when the service launches. Test again after correcting dependencies rather than assuming that an enabled service necessarily means YouTube is receiving video.
What a VPS reboot does not tell you
The outcome depends on the operating system, service manager, encoder, startup configuration, persisted settings and media, broadcast controls, and length of the interruption. Official guidance does not establish a typical recovery time or promise seamless playback. Likewise, YouTube’s cited automatic-archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, so do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will yield one complete uninterrupted recording.
