When utility power fails, a properly configured home battery system disconnects from the grid and supplies the circuits it was set up to back up. It may not power the whole house, and solar panels recharge it during an outage only if the system is designed to operate while isolated from the grid.

What happens when the grid goes down?

  1. The system detects the outage and isolates the home. Grid-tied equipment is designed to stop sending electricity to the utility when grid service fails. A battery system with suitable controls can separate the home from the grid and operate in an islanded mode. This protects utility workers and equipment; the U.S. Department of Energy explains the basic behavior in Solar and Resilience Basics.
  2. The battery powers the designated loads. An inverter converts the battery’s stored electricity into household AC power, and a controller or transfer equipment manages the connection. The system supplies only the circuits included in its backup configuration. That might mean selected essentials rather than every outlet and appliance.
  3. Those loads draw down the stored energy. How long the battery lasts depends on its usable energy, its state of charge when the outage starts, and the home’s consumption. Its output capacity also matters: a battery can have energy remaining yet be unable to serve a load whose instantaneous demand exceeds the system’s power capability.
  4. Solar may contribute power or recharge the battery. If the system supports solar generation while islanded, panels can produce electricity in daylight and may recharge the battery. Whether generation keeps pace with household use depends on sunlight, load, and equipment design.
  5. The system reconnects after utility service returns. A properly configured system can reconnect once the grid is restored. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s instructions and ask the installer how the specific system handles the transition.

Will a home battery keep the whole house running?

Not automatically. Backup coverage depends on which circuits were selected and on the battery, inverter, and controller’s capabilities. Some installations back up specific essential circuits; others may be configured for broader coverage. Ask the installer for the actual backed-up circuit list rather than assuming that a battery means whole-home backup.

Also check both energy and power ratings. Usable capacity, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), indicates how much energy is available for use. Continuous and peak output, measured in kilowatts (kW), describe how much power the system can deliver over time or for a short period. A large capacity figure by itself does not establish whether the system can start or run a particular appliance.

Will solar panels work during an outage?

Ordinary grid-tied solar panels generally shut off when grid service disappears. This prevents the system from energizing utility lines that workers may expect to be de-energized. Solar panels alone are not enough to provide backup: the installation needs storage and an inverter and controls designed for islanded operation. The DOE explains this distinction in its resilience guidance.

With a compatible solar-plus-storage setup, panels may continue producing power while the home is isolated from the grid. That can extend backup operation, but it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted or unlimited power: nighttime, clouds, system settings, and household demand all affect the balance between generation and use.

How to estimate how long a battery will last

There is no dependable runtime for an unspecified home. Start with the system’s usable capacity, not just a nominal battery rating, then consider the loads the system actually backs up and how much electricity they use. Continuous output and peak output determine whether those loads can run together or start successfully.

Installation and safety considerations

Do not modify service equipment or bypass grid-isolation devices to try to keep solar operating during an outage. Backup behavior depends on equipment and installation, and grid isolation is a safety function. Before installing storage, coordinate with the utility and a qualified installer about compatibility, metering, installation, and local building and fire-code requirements. The DOE’s homebuilder guide to solar-plus-storage discusses these planning considerations.
