If you don’t update your Android device, it can miss security fixes, bug fixes, new features and compatibility improvements. That does not mean it will automatically be attacked or become unusable: the impact depends on the device, its software, and the apps you use. Update schedules vary by device, manufacturer and mobile operator.
What can happen if you skip Android updates?
Known security flaws may remain unpatched
Android security updates fix vulnerabilities in supported software. If your device does not receive or install a fix, it may remain exposed to a flaw that the update addresses. That raises risk; it does not prove that someone will attack or compromise your particular phone. Your device’s security update date is a useful status check, but it is not a quantified measure of your personal risk. Android’s update guidance describes security as one reason to keep software current.
Apps and features may become incompatible
Some apps or app features may stop working as expected on older software, while newer Android features will not be available on a device that has not received the relevant version. The effects vary by app and device; an app does not necessarily stop working just because an update is available.

Bug fixes and improvements may be missed
Updates can include bug fixes and compatibility improvements. Google also lists slower performance, lag and reduced battery life among possible problems associated with not updating. These are possibilities, not guaranteed symptoms: installing an update does not guarantee that every phone will become faster or have longer battery life.

Android updates are not all the same
Android’s Settings screen reports several distinct update statuses. Checking one does not establish that every software component has the same update coverage.
- Android version: The operating-system version installed on the device.
- Android security update: The security update status or date shown for the device.
- Google Play system update: A separate system-update status shown in Settings.
Google also describes Google Play services and Google system services as supporting updates to system, application and key Google-service functions. These mechanisms complement Android updates; they do not mean every device receives identical updates or that a Google Play system update replaces every operating-system or security update. How to check your Android version and update status
- Open Settings, then tap About phone or About tablet.
- Tap Android version. Review the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update and build number.
- To check for an available update, open Settings > System > Software updates and follow the on-screen steps. Menu labels and locations can differ by manufacturer.
Google recommends using Wi-Fi and charging the device to at least 75% before updating. Updates can be large. If a download fails or the device lacks storage, follow the troubleshooting guidance for your device in Google’s Android version and update help.
What if no update is available?
No update appearing in Settings does not, by itself, prove that the device is current or that it is no longer supported. Availability and timing vary by device, manufacturer and mobile operator, and older devices may not be able to run newer Android versions. Google’s guidance is explicit: “Update schedules vary by device, manufacturer and mobile operator.” Check your manufacturer’s support information and, where relevant, ask your mobile operator about the update for your exact model and region. Google’s update guidance covers checking and troubleshooting; it cannot determine every model’s support eligibility.

If your device has reached the end of its available updates, continuing to use it means accepting its existing software state and any compatibility or security limitations. There is no universal replacement date: whether to keep using or replace it depends on the device’s support status, the apps and tasks you rely on, and your own risk tolerance.
