Public veterinary records from the University of California, Davis, described serious complications in particular monkeys after procedures involving Neuralink brain implants. WIRED reported examples including infection, pain behavior, impaired coordination, brain bleeding and a loose implant component. Those reports concern individual animals; they do not show that every monkey experienced the same problems, and the causes and circumstances are disputed.
What did the veterinary records describe?
In a September 2023 investigation, WIRED reported on UC Davis veterinary records concerning Neuralink research conducted at the California National Primate Research Center. The reports described complications in specific animals after implant procedures. Three examples illustrate the range of the records without implying that every animal had the same experience.
Animal 20: a broken and dislodged implant component
WIRED reported that records for Animal 20 described a component breaking and becoming dislodged, followed by bloody discharge and infection. The record description links those events in this case; it should not be treated as a general outcome for all implanted monkeys.

Animal 15: pain behavior and neurological problems
Records for Animal 15 were reported to describe pain behavior, impaired coordination, shaking, bleeding in the brain and damage to the cerebral cortex. The available account does not establish that these findings applied to other animals or settle every question about their cause.

Animal 22: a loose cranial implant
WIRED also reported a loose cranial implant in Animal 22. Its summary of the records mentioned other serious problems in some animals, including bloody diarrhea, partial paralysis and cerebral edema, but those descriptions should not be assigned to a particular animal without a case-specific record.
Who conducted the work, and what oversight did UC Davis describe?
UC Davis said Neuralink researchers conducted the work at the California National Primate Research Center under a research agreement that ended in 2020. In a February 9, 2022 statement, the university said its staff provided veterinary care and round-the-clock monitoring, and that the campus Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) reviewed and approved the protocols.

UC Davis said incidents were reported to the IACUC, which could require corrective action. The university’s statement put it this way: “When an incident occurred, it was reported to the IACUC, which mandated training and protocol changes as needed.” This is UC Davis’s account of its oversight process; it does not by itself resolve the disputes about individual cases or animal welfare.

Why do Neuralink and PCRM describe the cases differently?
Neuralink’s animal-welfare statement and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) interpret the records differently. Their statements are not equivalent kinds of evidence: Neuralink gives the company’s explanation of euthanasia decisions, while PCRM presents an advocacy organization’s interpretation and allegations based on records it reviewed.

The disagreement concerns not only what happened, but how to interpret cause, baseline health and the animals’ treatment. Neuralink cited pre-existing conditions and procedure-related risks; PCRM challenged the company’s framing using records and a necropsy report. The material available here does not settle all of those competing interpretations.

What can readers conclude from the records?
- WIRED’s account of public UC Davis veterinary records supports that individual monkeys experienced serious complications after implant procedures.
- The reported details vary by animal; a symptom or complication described for one case should not be attributed to all monkeys.
- UC Davis described IACUC review, veterinary monitoring, incident reporting and possible protocol changes. PCRM separately alleged welfare failures in its USDA complaint.
